2023 Video Snapshot: Lakota West

The golden age of football is going on right now at Lakota West. The program is coming off its first ever undefeated 10-0 regular season and third consecutive regional runner-up finish. The Firebirds are 32-4 in that span. Still, there is some unfinished business and with a deep defense that has the chance to be elite, leading the way, this squad is motivated to do something no other team from West Chester has ever done, win a regional championship and then some.

HONOR ROLL
Taebron Bennie-Powell, Sr, SS – A dynamic defensive back, Powell was a Second Team All-GMC selection as a junior. He registered 36 total tackles, one-and-a-half sacks, forced a fumble and a had a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Bennie-Powell has verbally committed to Notre Dame.
Jacob Asbeck, Sr, LB – A big game player. Asbeck was named OPSWA Division I Second Team All-Ohio after getting in on 74 total tackles with 10.0 sacks, 15.0 tackles for losses, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery as a junior. Asbeck who has 134 total tackles and 15.5 sacks in his career recently committed to Navy.
Elijah Davis, Sr, DL – The heart-and-soul of the Firebirds defense. Davis was named OPSWA Division I Second Team All-Southwest District in 2022. The two-time First Team All-GMC honoree has 111 total tackles, 11.5 sacks and three fumble recoveries in his career. Davis has verbally committed to Akron.
Brennan Remy, Sr, WR – Exploded onto the scene in 2022. Remy snared 46 receptions for 665 yards, amassed 1,077 all-purpose yards and found the end zone 11 times (10 rec, one rush) on his way to OPSWA Division I Honorable Mention All-Ohio (WR) accolades as a junior. He has verbally committed to Southeast Missouri.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: BRENNAN REMY
Drew Minich, Sr, DB – Took advantage of his opportunity when Miles was lost to injury last fall. Minich earned Second Team All-GMC honors after getting in on 23 total tackles with a pick-six. He has offers from Air Force, Akron, Army, Columbia, Kent State, Navy, Penn and Toledo.
Eudes Gonzales Jr., Sr, RB – Teams with Wilson to form a potent and powerful backfield. Gonzales Jr. found the end zone seven times (four rec, three rush), had 14 receptions for 286 yards and 193 yards rushing on his way Second Team All-GMC honors as a junior.
Jiovionni Wilson, Sr, RB/WR – Really came into his own last season. Wilson was named Second Team All-GMC after racking up 719 all-purpose yards (264 rush, 275 rec, 180 KR), with 23 receptions and five touchdowns (four rec, one KR).
OTHER RETURNEES
Gabriel Flores, Sr, LB – A returning starter and senior leader. Flores recorded 45 total tackles, had one-and-a-half sacks and five-and-a-half tackles s a junior.
Micah Markley, Jr, MLB – One of the most pleasant surprises of 2022. Markley tallied 70 total tackles, two sacks and 6.5 tackles for losses, in his first year as a starter.
Luka Gilbert, Jr, TE – The 6-foot-7, 240-pound tight end is poised for a breakout season. Gilbert reeled in five receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown as a sophomore. He has offers from Ohio State, Michigan, Boston College, UConn, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, UMass, Nevada, Pitt, Rutgers and Virginia Tech.
NEWCOMERS
Bukari Miles, Sr, DB – No one questions Miles’ talent he just needs to avoid injuries and get it done on the field. He is an FBS talent whose best days are still ahead.
Grant Beerman, Jr, LB – Saw his stock really rise this offseason. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound linebacker has picked up offers from Charlotte, Cincinnati, Duke, Eastern Michigan, Marshall, UMass, Miami (OH), Pitt, Purdue and Toledo.
Trey Barnette, Jr, WR – One of the best receivers in Northern Kentucky in 2022, Barnette is a great compliment to Remy in the passing game. He had 47 receptions for 616 yards and five touchdowns as sophomore.
Cam Thomas, So., OLB/DB – The best football is still ahead for Thomas who lettered as a freshman. He recorded 10 total tackles and a sack in eight games. Thomas has offers from Akron, Charlotte, Eastern Kentucky, Georgia Tech, UMass, Marshall and Miami (OH).
Jackson Smith, Fr, QB – The incoming freshman is in the mix to replace Firebirds four-year starter, Mitch Bolden, at quarterback. Whether he wins the starting job under center, or not…Smith is going make his presence known by the time the season ends. He has an offer from Kentucky.
