Player Spotlight: Ted Hammond

The St. Xavier Bombers had an uncharacteristic losing season in 2022. They finished a mere 5-7 but did push highly ranked rival Moeller in a pair of contests before falling in defeat. They also played Ohio powers Cleveland St. Ignatius and Lakota West to three-point slugfests. They came up short but showed they were capable of competing. Defense came to play in those outings and defensive lineman Ted Hammond was usually at the forefront of the charge.

At 6’5 and 271 pounds, Hammond’s physique is just as imposing as his game on the field. He’s been a consistent contributor to the Bombers’ defense for the past two seasons and looks to turn it up even more during his final campaign. Hammond was solid as a junior, tallying 41 TKLS, 4 sacks, and 7 TFL. He was named 1st team ALL GCL South for his efforts.

Playing in the rugged Greater Catholic League has prepared Hammond to have a breakout senior year. He’ll have plenty of chances to prove he’s one of the best defensemen not only in the state but the country as well. He’s already ranked as a four-star prospect. The Bombers schedule is tough as usual, and they’ll look for Hammond to be at the top of his game.

He’ll head to the University of Michigan next fall to compete in the BIG TEN wearing a different shade of blue. For now Hammond will be driving the St. Xavier defensive train in 2023.
