2023 Snapshot: Badin
- Updated: August 5, 2023
Four years ago Badin grabbed a share of the GCL Co-ed title its first league crown since 2011. Now the Rams have set the bar high winning 17 straight conference battles dating back to October 18th, 2019 and they are questing for a fifth straight GCL Co-ed championship (fourth in a row outright). Badin has set the bar high and feels that there is still room to elevate those standards.
“We lost some really good football players last year. We need people to step up on both sides of the ball. We also need players to make plays on special teams,” head coach Nick Yordy states.
He goes on, “we have a larger senior class that has waited for their opportunity to make an impact on this program. We have some returning starters that helped us last year and we will hope that experience pays off.”
Defense has been Badin’s calling card under Yordy and expect more of the same this fall. Over the past three seasons, the Rams are a combined 35-3 (14-0 GCL Co-ed). In that span, they have allowed just 8.8 points per game, 30 times opponents have scored 14 points or fewer, 18 have been held to seven points or less with nine shutouts for the flock.
The schedule is loaded with rivals including a long-awaited match up in Week 1 with Division I Hamilton for city bragging rights. Division II Edgewood in Week 3 will give the Rams all they can handle. Badin has been through the wars expect them to rise to the occasion, they understand and know how to win.
Division III, Region 12
2022 RECORD: 13-1, 5-0 GCL Co-ed
COACH: Nick Yordy (56-16 at Badin, six years; 56-16 overall)
HONOR ROLL
Alex Ritzie, Sr, QB – Slid into the role at starting quarterback like he had been doing it all his life in 2022. Ritzie threw for 2,637 yards with 26 touchdown passes and only three interceptions on his way to being named OPSWA Division III Third Team All-Ohio.
Carson Cheek, Sr, WR/DB – An impact player in all phases of the game. Cheeks is in an elite group, as a two-time All-Ohio selection, heading into his senior season. He followed up his OPSWA Division III First Team All-Ohio (DB) sophomore campaign by being named OPSWA Division III Second Team All-Ohio (DB) in 2022. He was in on 59 total tackles, had seven pass breakups, had four takeaways (two INTs, two FRs), 35 receptions, 349 yards receiving, three touchdown catches and a punt return for score as a junior. Check has 126 total tackles, two fumble recoveries and nine interceptions in his career.
Drew Enginger, Sr, WR/OLB – Back for another year as a starter on defense Enginger will see his role expand on offense this fall. He earned Second Team All-GCL Co-ed honors after getting in on 54 total tackles, with four sacks, eight tackles or losses and two interceptions as a junior.
Nate Ostendorf, Sr, LB – Will play a big role on defense as the team leader. Ostendorf recorded 98 total tackles, had a sack, nine tackles for losses and an interception on his way to First Team All-GCL Co-ed honors as a junior.
Drew Vocke, Sr, OL – The 2022 Second Team All-GCL Co-ed performer is one of the leaders of a veteran o-line that help produced 57 offensive touchdowns (29 pass, 28 rush) last season.
Ethan Kent, Jr, DL – Teams with classmate Rachel to give the Rams a very bright future along the d-line. Kent was a Second Team All-GCL Co-ed selection as a sophomore.
Royce Rachel, Jr, DL – The sky is the limit for Rachel who has all-state talent. He registered 44 total tackles, had three sacks, seven tackles for losses and one interception on his way to Second Team All-GCL Co-ed accolades in 2022.
Quinn Brennan, Sr, WR – Back for his third year as a starter, Brennan can keep a defense honest with his ability to move the chains. An Honorable Mention All-GCL Co-ed selection as a junior, Brennan has 25 career receptions for 304 yards and two touchdowns in his career.
OTHER RETURNEES
Aidan Brown, Sr, WR/DB – A special athlete that really strutted his stuff before having to sit out, after the first five games of last season, due to transfer rules. In that five-game glimpse of Brown he amassed 478 all-purpose yards, (95.4 yards/game), had 16 receptions, 245 yards receiving, 25 total tackles, one interception and scored four touchdowns (three rec, one IR). For his career, Brown has 1,736 all-purpose yards (757 rush, 313 rec, 466 ret), 173 yards passing and accounted for 14 touchdowns (six rush, four rec, three pass, one IR).
Austin Buckle, Sr, WR – The Rams are looking for another solid year out of Buckle. He had 26 receptions for 308 yards and three touchdowns as a junior.

Gavin Schlichter, Sr, OL – The 6-foot-3, 320-pound Schlicter was instrumental in the success of an efficient Rams passing game that completed 71.3% of its attempts a year ago.
Luke Franchini, Sr, OL – Another returning letterman on an offensive line that should be a strength of this Badin team.
Nick Warner, Sr, K – Was called upon to make some big kicks in 2022 and will be asked to the same this fall. Warner connected on 49/51 extra points and 8/12 field goal attempts for 73 kicking points as a junior.
Zach Yordy, Sr, RB – Will see his role on offense expand this fall. Yordy ran for 326 yards, with eight touchdowns rushing, 24 total tackles and four pass breakups in 2022. He has 435 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing in his career.
NEWCOMERS
All signs point to big things for sophomore RB/DB Lem Grayson and junior DE Roscoe Martin in 2023. Grayson recorded 24 total tackles, had three pass breakups, one interception along with 244 yards and four rushing touchdowns in eight games as a freshman. Most of his defensive stats came in the playoffs while the majority of Grayson’s 40 carries on offense all came late (running clock time) in five of the Rams blowout wins.
