Blitz 5 Top 25: Week 2

It was a tough start to the season for the big boys. Only five of the 19 teams in Division I, Region 4 came up victorious. That has led to shake ups at the top and bottom of the Blitz 5 Top 25 presented by TriStateFootball.com.

Division II Winton Woods takes over the top spot in the rankings after an excellent road win and the top two teams previously ahead of them in the poll, Moeller and Lakota West, going down in Week 1.

There are four games that will see Blitz 5 Top 25 teams facing off in Week 2. Looking to bounce back, #5 Lakota West hosts #3 Princeton, #19 Middletown aims to take down #22 Colerain for a second straight season, #13 Lakota East will host #23 Hamilton and #12 Covington Catholic is on the road at #24 Highlands in this upcoming week’s Blitz 5 Game of the Week.

Here is a look at the latest Blitz 5 Top 25:

1. Winton Woods (1-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Trotwood-Madison (0-1), 21-7. Two defensive touchdowns propelled the Warriors to a 13th straight regular season win. NEXT UP: 8/25 – WALNUT HILLS (0-1).

2. St. Xavier (1-0) – LAST WEEK: beat then #2 LAKOTA WEST (0-1), 10-0. The Bombers gave a selfless team effort in a great win to start the year. NEXT UP: 8/26 – Martin Luther King, Jr. (MI) (0-0).

3. Princeton (1-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Elyria (0-1), 41-7. Junior Jordan Fitzpatrick found the end zone on all three of his offensive touches in his varsity debut for the Vikings. NEXT UP: 8/25 – at #5 Lakota West (0-1).

4. Moeller (0-1) – LAST WEEK: lost to BEN DAVIS (IN) (1-0), 49-28. The Crusaders gave up 40-plus points for the first time since October 2021. NEXT UP: 8/25 – BISHOP DWENGER (IN)(0-1).

5. Lakota West (0-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at then #4 St. Xavier, 10-0. Offense sputters but the Firebirds defense shows its still the real deal. NEXT UP: 8/25 – at #3 Princeton (1-0).

6. Elder (0-1) – LAST WEEK: lost to PICKERINGTON NORTH (1-0), 39-35. The Panthers had a tough time stopping the run, giving up 10.7 yards on 30 carries with five touchdowns to Pickerington North. NEXT UP: 8/25 – Neumann-Goretti (PA) (0-0).

7. Fairfield (0-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at Wayne (1-0), 58-51. Indians quarterback Talon Fisher amassed 389 yards of total offense and six touchdowns only to be outdueled by Wayne’s Tyrell Lewis, who had 406 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns. NEXT UP: 8/25 – SYCAMORE (0-1).

8. Withrow (1-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Walnut Hills (0-1), 42-0. The Tigers showed an array of weapons on offense and tenacity on defense in Week 1 drubbing of Eagles. NEXT UP: 8/25 – at Springboro (0-1).

9. East Central (1-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Lawrenceburg (0-1), 42-7. Six first half touchdowns from senior Josh Ringer had the Trojans picking up where they left off in 2023. Ringer has 60 career rushing touchdowns. NEXT UP: 8/25 – HARRISON (1-0).

10. Anderson (1-0) – LAST WEEK: won at South Oldham (KY) (0-1), 44-15. An almost perfect first start saw the Raptors Justice Burnam go 17/18 for 256 yards and six touchdowns passing. NEXT UP: 8/25 – LOVELAND (0-1).

11. Milford (1-0) – LAST WEEK: beat then #22 Edgewood (0-1), 42-7. Keep an eye on the Eagles. They have the pieces to be special. NEXT UP: 8/25 – at Lebanon (1-0).

12. Covington Catholic (1-0) – LAST WEEK: beat RYLE (0-1), 37-22. The road doesn’t get any easier for the Colonels at archrival Highlands. NEXT UP: 8/25 – at #25 Highlands (1-0).

13. Lakota East (0-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at Centerville (1-0), 30-12. Miracles don’t happen overnight. The Thunderhawks still have a ways to go to get to the Elks level. NEXT UP: 8/25 – #22 HAMILTON (0-1).

14. Taft (1-0) – LAST WEEK: beat PLEASURE RIDGE PARK (KY)(0-1), 40-18. It was a very strong opening outing in all phases of the game for the Senators. Transfer Armoud Seals threw for five touchdowns for the third time in his last nine starts. NEXT UP: 8/25 – at Reading (1-0).

15. Kings (1-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Sycamore (0-1), 29-22. From star defensive back to star running back, the Knights Paul Kelly carried the ball 17 times for 197 yards and four touchdowns. NEXT UP: 8/25 – TURPIN (1-0).

16. Mount Healthy (1-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Little Miami (0-1), 24-0. The Owls defense posted its third shutout in the last eight games. NEXT UP: 8/25 – ROSS (0-1).

17. Mason (0-1) – LAST WEEK: lost to GAHANNA LINCOLN (1-0), 10-5. No shame in losing to one of the best defenses in the state, but where is the offense going to come from for the Comets? NEXT UP: 8/25 – at Oak Hills (0-1).

18. La Salle (1-0) – LAST WEEK: BEAT then #21 COLERAIN (0-1), 28-3.The Lancers snapped a nine-game losing streak. NEXT UP: 8/25 – at Northmont (1-0).

19. Middletown (1-0) – LAST WEEK: beat LOVELAND (0-1), 31-16. The Middies haven’t won a GMC opener since 2015. NEXT UP: 8/25 – #22 COLERAIN (0-1).

20. Badin (1-0) – LAST WEEK: won at then #23 Hamilton (0-1). Bragging rights were earned for the Rams in “Safe City,” after picking up their 28th straight regular season win. NEXT UP: 8/25 – at Columbus De Sales (1-0).

21. Colerain (0-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at #18 La Salle (1-0), 28-3. The Cardinals’ run game struggled with -31 yards rushing on 30 attempts versus Lancers. NEXT UP: 8/25 – at #19 Middletown (1-0).

22. Hamilton (0-1) – LAST WEEK: lost to then #24 BADIN (1-0), 18-0. NEXT UP: The Big Blue “blues” continued as they got shutout for the fourth time in their last nine games. 8/25 – at #13 Lakota East (0-1).

23. Beechwood (1-0) – LAST WEEK: won at McNicholas, 31-14. The Tigers extended their winning streak to 11 games with a road win over Rockets. NEXT UP: 8/25 – at Campbell County (1-0).

24. Highlands (1-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Lexington Catholic (0-1), 34-27. There’s no time to relax for the Bluebirds as they have another tough test on tap for Week 2. NEXT UP: 8/25 – vs. #12 Covington Catholic (1-0).

25. Edgewood (0-1) – LAST WEEK: lost to No. 11 Milford, 42-7. The Cougars got overwhelmed in their opener and will need a strong effort in Week 2 to stay in the rankings with so many teams on the bubble. NEXT UP: 8/25 – at Clinton-Massie (1-0).
