NKY Round-UP: Simon Kenton storms back
- Updated: August 18, 2023
Some Colonels got off to a hot start and some Pioneers roared back from a big deficit to gain a big win of their own in week one in Northern Kentucky.
12 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 37, RYLE 22
Covington Catholic was back to their winning ways as they got a big win over visiting Ryle on Friday night. The Colonels jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back as they fought off the Raiders for the victory.
The Colonels offense was humming as they were able to move the ball all night on the Ryle defense. The Raiders did respond at the end of the half and were able to score and cut the lead to 21-7 at the half.
After a defensive third quarter, the Raiders cut the lead to just eight at 23-15 after a score and two point conversion. That would be as close as they would get as the Colonels pushed the lead out over the final ten minutes of the ball game to get the win.
SIMON KENTON 29, DIXIE HEIGHTS 19
Five first half turnovers put Simon Kenton behind the eight ball against Dixie Heights Friday night. The Pioneers threw three interceptions and had two lost fumbles as they created an early deficit for themselves. The Pioneers could not do anything right as they fell behind 19-7 at the half.
The second half started with both teams turning the ball over on downs. Once the turnovers stopped, the scoring started. Quarterback Brady Lee found Nathan Kitchens for a touchdown strike to cut the lead to 19-14 about halfway through the third quarter.
After a big defensive stop, Landon Brown scored on a four yard rush. The conversion was good and suddenly Simon Kenton led 22-19. After a quick three and out, the Pioneers drove all the way down the field and this time Lee called his own number and scored on a five-yard rush to slam the door on the Colonels of Dixie Heights
LLOYD 24, NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 7
Lloyd scored 24 unanswered points to beat Newport Central Catholic after falling behind by a touchdown early. The Juggernauts bounced back after NewCath’s Demetrick Welch took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a score.
Lloyd rushed for 238 yards on the ground and had nine runs of ten or more yards. Yuri Collins Comer scored two TD’s to lead the rushing attack as they gained their footing and started to take control of the game. Offensively the Juggernauts were crisp and efficient.
The Lloyd defense was impressive as well as they held down the Thoroughbred offense for the majority of the night. NewCath did not move the ball well all night and only had eight first downs for the entire game. They advanced into Lloyd territory just once as the Juggernauts dominated all facets of the game.
