NKY Round-Up: Colonels cruise
- Updated: September 1, 2023
The Colonels of CovCath continued their unblemished season in dominating fashion and the Raiders of Ryle won their second straight in our NKY round-up.
NO. 11 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 50, SIMON KENTON 12
Covington Catholic continued their undefeated season with a dominating win over Simon Kenton on Friday night. The Colonels controlled every facet of the game en route to the big win. Senior quarterback Evan Pitzer had an outstanding night. He was 13/16 for 249 yards and three touchdowns on the night. Pitzer also carried the ball three times for 39 yards and another score to pace the Colonels.
Cash Harney, Andrew Bessler, and Will Michels all rushed for touchdowns for the Colonels. Bessler also hauled in a receiving touchdown as did Kentucky commit Willie Rodriguez. The Colonels defense forced two turnovers on the night and made it difficult for Simon Kenton the entire night. The Pioneers were led by quarterback Brady Lee (12/17, 115 yards, TD) in a losing effort.
RYLE 28, COOPER 10
Ryle forced three Cooper turnovers en route to a solid win on Friday night. The Raiders won their second consecutive outing and seem to have some momentum heading into mid season. Ryle was led by their do-it-all quarterback Logan Verax in the victory.
Verax had a terrific ball game in leading his team to victory on Friday night. Verax scored on runs of 42 and 1 yards and controlled the game from the quarterback position. The Raiders’ defense also put forth an outstanding effort as they held Cooper to just 10 points in the win.
NO. 22 BEECHWOOD 49, DIXIE HEIGHTS 48
Beechwood overcame a 13-point halftime deficit to defeat Dixie Heights in overtime. With the win, the Tigers won their 13th consecutive game dating back to last season’s championship run.
A big second half offensively put the Tigers over the hump as they won a shootout. Both offenses put on a hefty display of firepower as neither defense could do anything to keep their opponents out of the endzone. In the end it was Beechwood who made the deciding play when they needed to to secure the win and remain undefeated.
