NKY Round-Up: Pioneers bounce back
- Updated: September 15, 2023
The season neared its midway point with a great slate of action in Week 5. CovCath remained unbeaten, the Pioneers got a big win and Campbell County rolled past NewCath in our NKY round-up.
NO. 9 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 35, NO. 19 BEECHWOOD 31
Covington Catholic stormed back from a 21-0 deficit to beat Beechwood and end their 14-game win streak. The Colonels used some big plays to get back into the game and seize control to remain undefeated.
CovCath trailed by ten at the half (24-14) but never let that score get to them as they only gave up seven points the rest of the way. Tate Kruer and Owen Leen scored first half TDs for the Colonels. Evan Pitzer tallied three passing and one rushing touchdowns to lead the Colonels as is customary
The Colonels defense stood up to the challenge of the Beechwood air raid offense in the second half and was able to contain Beechwood quarterback Clay Hayden’s passing attack in the victory.

Simon Kenton bounced back from a tough loss a week ago to double up Conner. Durrell Turner ran for 175 yards and two scores for the Pioneers. Quarterback Brady Lee passed for 254 yards and a touchdown and he also rushed for two scores on the night.
Wyatt Hatfield led the way for Conner as he rushed for 99 yards on the night and threw for another 90 in the losing effort.
