Vikings victorious in home opener
- Updated: September 1, 2023
Princeton and Lakota East played a highly contested GMC battle Friday night. The Vikings and Thunderhawks both looked to get big conference wins.
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Our Blitz 5 Game of the week landed in Sharonville on Friday night. The Princeton Vikings squared off with the Lakota East Thunderhawks looking to protect their home turf. Lakota East came in at 0-2 seeking to right their ship in the early season matchup. Princeton on the other hand looked to continue their hot start. In the end it was Princeton coming away with a 30-16 victory.
Both teams got off to a slow start as both defenses made timely plays. Lakota East moved the ball well on their opening drive, pushing deep into Princeton territory. A botched snap led to a fumble that was recovered by Princeton’s PJ Nelson. Lakota East would get a stop however and go on another long drive into the second quarter. East quarterback Jamison Kitna was big on the drive by finding Andy Vogelmann on a long pass and creating a big scramble of his own to lead the drive. Ryder Hooks would punch one in from the 1-yard line and Lakota East led 7-0.
Princeton would waste no time in answering. Landon Miree caught a long pass over the middle from quarterback DeAngelo Birch. Birch would follow that up with a 22-yard quarterback draw and David Hambrick took the next handoff 19 yards from a touchdown and a tie game. Now it was the Princeton defense that would get off the field quickly by forcing a three and out. Lakota East would punt and Antonio Hunter returned it 53 yards for a Viking strike. The Vikings would tack on a late 28-yard field goal by Cole Kimble as the second quarter expired to take a 17-7 lead into the half.

Lakota East recovered an onside to start the half, but the momentum was for not. Kitna scrambled on third down and fumbled and the Vikings recovered. A play later, David Hambrick found Jordan Houston on the halfback pass for a long touchdown and a commanding lead at 23-7. The Thunderhawks would respond with a huge drive as Ryder Hooks took a big run around the right side and Kitna capped the drive by finding Vogelmann on a fade route for 23 yards and a touchdown.
Princeton’s Birch would add a 5-yard score to again stretch the lead late in the third and the Viking defense would come on strong to close the game out for the home team. Princeton keeps their eyes on the GMC crown as Lakota East continues in search of their first victory of the season.
