Cincinnati Round-Up: West survives scare

Lakota West and Hamilton picked up solid wins to set up a week 10 GMC showdown for key playoff seeding and some Warriors bounced back in the ECC.

NO. 4 LAKOTA WEST 10, NO. 19 MASON 7

The Firebirds of Lakota West continued their winning streak with another victory on Friday night. The Firebird defense continued to be a force to be reckoned with as Lakota West shut down the Mason offense and did just enough offensively to come away with the win.

The game was a defensive struggle as both teams failed to score a point in the first half. The Mason defense made some big stops to keep their team in the game as both offenses had trouble getting anything going. In the third, the Comets struck first as Vaughn Johnson hauled in a short TD pass from Quinn Brown for a 7-0 lead. Midway through the fourth the Firebirds would answer when Luka Gilbert scored to tie the game.

Brayden Benner knocked in a 20-yard game winning field goal with 1:46 remaining to lift the Firebirds to victory and a seven-game win streak.

NO. 14 HAMILTON 28, NO. 18 SYCAMORE 21

The Hamilton Big Blue continued their strong season with a victory over host Sycamore on Friday night. The Big Blue defense has been a terror for opposing offenses all season long and that trend continued against the Aviators in the first half.

Cournell Bennett-McCoy got things going with a 2-yard rushing score for Hamilton to go up early. After a field goal, Hamilton held a 10-0 lead at the half. Carter Isaacs returned an interception for a touchdown early in the third quarter for a 17-0 lead that they would never relinquish.

Sycamore showed some fight in the second half. The Aviator offense got going and responded with two straight scores to cut the Hamilton lead to three at 17-14. Then the fireworks started. The Big Blue added a field goal to take a 20-14 lead. Sycamore would respond with a touchdown with 15 seconds left to take a 21-20 lead and a pumped up home crowd. The hype would be short lived however as Jailed Morris took the ensuing kick to the house for a score. After a conversion, Hamilton won 28-21.

NO. 6 ANDERSON  31, TURPIN 7

The Anderson Raptors continued their strong season and look to be major contenders in division II after a win over Turpin on Friday night. The Raptors high octane offense was its usual self as the Raptors once again lit up the scoreboard on their way to the win.

It was a slow start however as Brodey Berg scored the lone touchdown of the half as Anderson led only 7-0 at the break. Things picked up in the second half, however. Justice Burnam threw two second half touchdown passes. He hooked up with Trace Jallick and Mike Smith for passing scores. Berg added another rushing score as well for the Raptors as they are warming up for another playoff run.
