East Central completes repeat
- Updated: November 25, 2023
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – The East Central Trojans captured the Class 4A IHSAA State Championship for the second straight year on Saturday as they knocked off the Northwood Panthers in convincing fashion at Lucas Oil Field, 42-14.
East Central became the first public school to repeat as Class 4A champs; repeat championships had never happened in the Trojans’ rich program history. This is the fourth overall state championship for East Central (2022, 2017, and 2014).
The Trojans sputtered a bit out of the gate in this contest, but exploded for 21 second-quarter points and never looked back.
Senior Josh Ringer capped off his stellar campaign and made his case to be named Mr. Football in Indiana by rushing for 251 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries. He wrapped up his Trojan career with a bang and finished the season with 2,800 yards.
Western Michigan commit Ryan Brotherton added 77 yards and a TD of his own on eight carries as Trojans compiled a total 353 yards running the football. Cole Burton also added a rushing score in the win.

The Trojans’ defense came up with four interceptions in the game, including a pick-six by Moses Wheat to cap off the team’s scoring. Carson Pieczonka had a pair of interceptions and Bradyen Rouse pitched in with another.
With the victory East Central also completes the quest for an undefeated season. The defense had a huge hand in that, pitching seven shutouts. The Trojans outscored their opponents 740-97 over the course of the season.
