2023 TSF Cincinnati Team of the Year: Moeller
- Updated: February 20, 2024
Odds were stacked against Moeller heading into 2023. A new head coach in Bert Bathiany, five unknowns on the offensive line and a schedule loaded with top-tier opponents. The Crusaders stumbled out of the gate to a 1-3 start with losses to the eventual Indiana Class 6A state champion, Ben Davis, Indiana Class 6A state semifinalist, Center Grove and Indiana Class 4A state champion, East Central. Moeller would rebound winning nine games in the next 10 weeks capturing another GCL South title with its only loss to Ohio Division I state champion St. Edward in that span. That put the Crusaders back in the state semifinals after winning a third straight Division I, Region 4 championship. They would eventually fall to Springfield in the final four for a third straight year.
That effort and perseverance saw Moeller be named the TriState Football Cincinnati Team of the Year for a second straight season as TSF paid tribute to the area’s finest from Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Dayton and Southeast Indiana at the Year in Review Show on Monday night, in front of a packed house at the Holy Grail in downtown Cincinnati..
The Moeller offense averaged 31.8 points and 372.0 yards of total offense (232.7 pass) per game with 59 trips to the end zone (27 rush, 32 pass). Senior running back Jordan Marshall would spearhead the attack on his way to being named the 37th recipient of the coveted Ohio Mr. Football award. For a second straight year, Marshall earned OPSWA Division I Ohio Offensive Player of the Year, TriState Football Cincinnati Offensive Player of the Year, OPSWA Division I First Team All-Ohio, OPSWA Division I Southwest District Offensive Player of the Year, GCL South Athlete of the Year, First Team All-TSF and TSF Cincinnati Offensive Player of the Year Finalist (for a third straight season).

The Crusaders defense put the pressure on opponents allowing just 16.6 points per game with 25.0 sacks, 93.0 tackles for losses and 33 takeaways (11 FRs, 22 INTs). Kyler Paul, TSF Cincinnati Defensive Player of the Year Finalist, Karson Hobbs and Drew Robinson stepped up big time as senior leaders for the unit.
Joining Marshall as OPSWA Division I First Team All-Ohio selections were Paul (LB) and junior Jovan Love (WR). Hobbs (DB) was named OPSWA Division I Second Team All-Ohio. Junior Matt Ponatoski (QB) along with seniors Robinson (DB) and Ethan Page (P) garnered OPSWA Division I Third Team All-Ohio accolades. Jewett Hayes was named OPSWA Division I Honorable Mention All-Ohio.
This is the third time that Moeller has been named the TriState Football Cincinnati Teams of the Year. The Crusaders join La Salle (2014-16) as the only teams to have won the award in back-to-back years.
