2024 Video Snapshot: Centerville
- Updated: May 6, 2024
With 27 victories over the past three campaigns, Centerville is back in the upper echelon of teams in Southwest Ohio. The Elks are coming off their first league title since 2017. With an exciting but challenging non-conference schedule followed by the rugged GWOC slate, 10 wins may be tough to get to but don’t count this program out from achieving that accomplishment. This roster knows how to get the job done. Centerville will be a force again in 2024.
Division I, Region 2
2023 RECORD: 9-3, 6-1 GWOC
COACH: Brent Ullery (47-30 at Centerville, seven years; 47-30 overall)
HONOR ROLL
Leland Gantz, Sr, K – Arguably the best kicker in the state. Gantz was outstanding as a junior connecting on 28/29 extra points tries and 11/13 field goal attempts (long of 54-yards) for 61 kicking points. He also had 40 touchbacks on 54 kickoffs, averaged 37.5 yards on 44 punts (long of 57-yard) while dropping 17 punts inside the opponents 20-yard line. Those efforts earned Gantz OPSWA Division I Second Team All-Ohio (K) and Third Team All-TriState Football (K) honors.
Mason Keely, Sr, DE/LS – A leader of the defense and one of the most underrated players in Southwest Ohio. Keely was named OPSWA Division I Honorable Mention All-Ohio (DL) as a junior. A three-year starter, Keely has 103 total tackles, five-and-a-half sacks, 15.5 tackles for losses and an interception in his career.
Parker Johnson, Jr, RB – Will be a focal point of the offense. Johnson ran for 667 yards, averaged 6.4 yards per carry and found the end zone four times on his way to Second Team All-GWOC honors as a sophomore.
Matt Jones, Sr, NT – Is going to be counted on to guide the younger lineman as they get acclimated to the Friday night lights. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Jones was named Honorable Mention All-GWOC after registering 36 total tackles with two sacks and six tackles for losses in 2023.
Jackson Puckett, Sr, LB – The top returning tackler on a team that allowed just 13.9 points per game a year ago. Puckett recorded 88 total tackles, had three sacks, 11.5 tackles for losses and a forced fumble on his way to Honorable Mention All-GWOC accolades as a junior.
Jake Taylor, Sr, LB – Teams with Puckett to give the Elks a strong core at linebacker. Taylor was named Honorable Mention All-GWOC after getting in on 79 total tackles with 13.0 tackles for losses, a sack, a fumble recovery, an interception and four pass breakups last fall.
OTHER RETURNEES
Kuol Kuol, Sr, OL – Has become a hot commodity this offseason. The 6-foot-6, 255-pound Kuol who also has a 6-foot-10 wingspan has picked up offers from Akron, Army, Austin Peay State, Ball State, Coastal Carolina, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Iowa State, Kent State, UMass, Miami (OH), Toledo, Western Kentucky, Western Michigan and Youngstown State.
Zane Hough, Sr, OL – An anchor and veteran on the o-line who looks to help the offense improve on the 265.7 yards of total offense that it averaged in 2023.
Bryce Borham-Thomas, Sr, DB – One of the few secondary members that has varsity experience, Borham-Thomas will see his role as a leader really amp up. He was in on 27 total tackles, with five breakups and an interception as a junior.
Quincy Capogna, Jr, WR – Was rock solid in his varsity debut. Capogna had 30 receptions for 316 yards and a pair of scores.
Shane Cole, Jr, QB – Will move into the role at quarterback. In four games last season, including two in the playoffs, Cole threw for 58 yards, ran for 154 yards and had a touchdown passing and one rushing.
