Cincinnati Round-Up: Firebirds, Thunderhawks get wins
- Updated: August 30, 2024
There were some big-time battles with major early season implications in week two. Mason battled their way to .500 and Lakota West proved to be tough for Hamilton in our Cincinnati Round-Up.
NO. 2 LAKOTA WEST 31, NO. 9 HAMILTON 0
Lakota West and Hamilton engaged in an early season conference showdown with a lot on the line as it was the Firebirds who protected their home field in a hard-fought victory. West jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead and never looked back as they dispatched Hamilton and moved to 2-0.
Sam Wiles accounted for three first half touchdowns as he rushed for two and threw for another to make an early statement in the Greater Miami Conference. Braedyn Johnson had a touchdown reception as well for Lakota West. Hamilton had trouble getting anything positive going and dropped to 1-1 on the season.
NO. 6 WINTON WOODS 19, NO. 11 KINGS 5
Winton Woods and Kings did battle in a defensive slugfest in Forest Park on Friday night. The Knights and Warriors made life difficult on the opposing offenses all game long. Winton Woods returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the first half as they brought confusion to Kings quarterback Grant Nurre.
Winton Woods head coach joined us on 700 WLW to talk about the win:
The Warrior offense was finally able to get going at the end of the half with a touchdown from Bryshawn Brown to Seaonta Stewart. Winton Woods led 19-5 at the half and were able to salt away a home win in front of a nice crowd in week two.
NO. 19 LAKOTA EAST 20, NO. 12 MASON 13
The Lakota East Thunderhawks used a steady running game and stingy defense to earn a win against Mason on Friday night. East used a physical gameplan to grind out a win and improve to 1-1 on the short season.
This was a grind it out defensive struggle with neither team giving an inch. Both defenses put up an outstanding effort to keep the other offense in a headlock. East was finally able to get some offensive mojo going in the second half. Quarterback JT Kitna was in command as the Thunderhawks offense ran smoothly to a win in the second half. He tossed a touchdown pass to seal things for East.
