NKY Round-Up: Raiders make some noise

Things got off to a fast start in week one in Northern Kentucky as several squads made early season statements. Ryle started their season with a big time win and Simon Kenton got the W over Dixie Heights in our Week 1 NKY Round-Up.

NO. 17 RYLE 30, NO. 12 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 14
Ryle and Covington Catholic battled in a hard-nosed affair on Friday night. The Raiders and Colonels played a physical ball game with both teams barely giving an inch in front of a sold-out crowd. The game was tied up in the waning moments of the third-quarter on a highlight-reel TD grab by Donovan Bradshaw, but it would be all Ryle in the game’s final 12 minutes.

The Raiders got a little more offense and were able to come away with a big win in front of their home crowd. Ryle blew open a 14-14 ball game with a big fourth quarter to put the game away. Nathan Verax, who is taking over as the starting quarterback for his older brother Logan, put together a complete game to lead his team to victory. The younger Verax ran for a touchdown and passed for another, connecting on a 16-yard pass to Landon Lorms in the second quarter.

Ultimately though it was the defense that sealed the deal for the Raiders. Ryle took a 21-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter on 20-yard TD run by Jacob Savage. Then the defense then scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery and followed up with a safety as they capitalized on costly miscues by a young Colonels’ team.

NO. 17 HIGHLANDS 17, LEXINGTON CATHOLIC 7
Highlands used a tough and strong defensive effort to get by Lexington Catholic on Friday night. The Bluebirds did their damage on the defensive end with sure tackling and timely forced turnovers to come away with the victory. CovCath was limited to just 161 yards of offense while picking off Matthew Kern twice. Tommy Ferring led the charge with three of Highland’s four sacks.

Adam Surrey had a rushing score for Highlands, but the story was the Bluebirds’ defense who was able to thwart much of all the offensive firepower of Lexington Catholic. Peyton Klosterman picked off a late LexCath pass to put the icing on the cake for a solid win.

Junior Rio Litmer looked solid in his varsity debut at quarterback as he completed 17-of-21 passes for 131 yards as the Bluebirds netted 313 yards of total offense.

SIMON KENTON 50, DIXIE HEIGHTS 35
Simon Kenton used a big-time offensive performance to run past Dixie Heights for a win. The Pioneers high powered offense was clicking on all cylinders early and often. Brady Lee, Torin Turner, Grayson Harris all scored for the Pioneers. Lee accounted for five touchdowns with three through the air and two rushing.
