Blitz 5 Top 25: Week 3

It’s Week 3 of the regular season and the Blitz 5 Top 25 presented by TriStateFootball.com is loaded with matchups that could really rankle the rankings. There are six games pitting ranked teams against each other.
Highlighting the marques is an epic GMC battle as #2 Lakota West travels to #4 Princeton. The conference also sees #9 Hamilton hosting #19 Lakota East and #25 Oak Hills on the road at #20 Mason. Top ranked Moeller looks to avenge last seasons loss to #17 East Central, #6 Winton Woods faces another tough challenge against #14 Milford. In Kentucky, #7 Cooper gets a big test versus #13 Ryle.
Here’s the Blitz 5 Top 25 for Week 3:
1. Moeller (2-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Bishop Dwenger (IN) (0-2), 42-18. Junior quarterback Matt Ponatoski has thrown for four touchdowns in each of Big Moe’s victories. NEXT UP: 9/06 – #17 EAST CENTRAL (1-1).
2. Lakota West (2-0) – LAST WEEK: beat #9 HAMILTON (1-1), 31-0. Sophomore Kenyon Norman has a breakout game with 12 touches for 130 yards and a receiving touchdown against the Big Blue. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at #4 Princeton (1-1).
3. St. Xavier (1-1) – LAST WEEK: won at Centerville (1-1), 34-10. The Bombers defense has held opponents to just 5-23 on the third and fourth down conversions. NEXT UP: 9/06 – CATHEDRAL (IN)(1-1).
4. Princeton (1-1) – LAST WEEK: won at Sycamore (0-2), 52-0. Seven different Vikings find the end zone against the Aviators. NEXT UP: 9/06 – #2 LAKOTA WEST (2-0).
5. Anderson (2-0) – LAST WEEK: won at West Clermont (1-1), 52-7. The Raptors have outscored their first two opponents 82-7 in the first half of their two victories. NEXT UP: 9/06 – LITTLE MIAMI (0-2).
6. Winton Woods (2-0) – LAST WEEK: beat #11 KINGS (1-1), 19-5. The Warriors defense has been stellar allowing just five and six points against two potent opponents. NEXT UP: 9/06 – #14 MILFORD (2-0).
7. Cooper (2-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Henry Clay (0-2), 47-0. The Jaguars are 10-1 in their last 11 games with the only loss being to Bowling Green in last year’s Class 5A state championship. NEXT UP: 9/06 – #13 RYLE (2-0).
8. Elder (2-0) – LAST WEEK: beat West Catholic (MI)(0-1), 20-13. The Panthers defense has allowed just 90 yards rushing over their opponents last 42 carries. NEXT UP: 9/06 – SPRINGBORO (2-0).
9. Hamilton (1-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at #2 Lakota West (2-0), 31-0. A sixth straight loss to Lakota West has the Big Blue still trying to figure out how to beat the best in the GMC. NEXT UP: 9/06 – #19 LAKOTA EAST (1-1).
10. Highlands (2-0) – LAST WEEK: won at then #17 Covington Catholic (0-2), 32-22. The Bluebirds have now won 10 straight regular season contests. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at Campbell County (1-1) .
11. Kings (1-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at #6 Winton Woods (2-0), 19-5. The Knights defense has given up just 76 yards in both contests. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at Loveland (0-2).
12. La Salle (2-0) – NEXT UP: beat Northmont (0-2), 27-6. The Lancers are looking to start 3-0 for the first time since 2021. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at Fairmont (2-0).
13. Ryle (2-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Conner (1-1), 46-8. It’s the battle of Union, Kentucky on Friday night. Ryle holds a 13-3 advantage in the all-time series against Cooper. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at #7 Cooper (2-0).
14. Milford (2-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Walnut Hills (1-1), 38-0. The Eagles will have a dog fight on their hands against Winton Woods in their quest for a 15th straight regular season win. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at #6 Winton Woods (2-0).
15. Middletown (2-0) – LAST WEEK: beat then #22 OAK HILLS (1-1), 34-14. The surprising Middies are looking to go 3-0 for the first time since 2011. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at Colerain (0-2).
16. Harrison (2-0) – LAST WEEK: beat then #10 East Central (1-1), 35-28. The Wildcats are for real after ending East Central’s 22-game winning streak. NEXT UP: 9/06 – INDIAN HILL (2-0).
17. East Central (1-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at Harrison (2-0), 35-28. The Trojans fall for the first time since October 2022. They have never lost two games in a row head coach Jake Meiners’ six years at the helm. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at #1 Moeller (2-0).
18. Covington Catholic (0-2) – LAST WEEK: lost to Highlands (1-0), 32-22. Things don’t get any easier for CovCath who faces a Simon Kenton squad that is averaging 55.5 points per game. NEXT UP: 9/06 – SIMON KENTON (2-0).
19. Lakota East (1-1) – LAST WEEK: beat then #12 MASON (0-2), 20-13. The Thunderhawks end a five game losing streak and equal last season’s win total after knocking off the Comets. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at #9 Hamilton (1-1).
20. Mason (0-2) – LAST WEEK: lost at then #19 Lakota East (1-1), 20-13. The Comets offense has only been able to find the end zone twice this season. NEXT UP: 9/06 – #25 OAK HILLS(1-1) .
21. Lebanon (2-0) – LAST WEEK: beat Loveland (0-2), 19-10. The Warriors may win “ugly” but these seniors are now 7-1 in their last eight games with an average margin of victory of 4.4 points in those contests. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at West Clermont (1-1).
22. Badin (0-2) – LAST WEEK: lost to St. Francis De Sales (1-1), 17-3. This is the first 0-2 start for the Rams since 2019. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at Edgewood (0-2).
23. Fairfield (1-1) – LAST WEEK: won at Colerain (0-1), 33-13. Senior Tyler George has run for more than 100 yards in both games after moving from receiver a year ago. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at Sycamore (0-2).
24. Beechwood (2-0) – LAST WEEK: beat Campbell County (1-1), 42-20. The Tigers offense is in full gear averaging 359.0 yards per game against a pair of much larger schools. NEXT UP: 9/06 – DIXIE HEIGHTS (1-1).
25. Oak Hills (1-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at then #18 Middletown (2-0), 34-14. The Highlanders have allowed 30-plus points in both games. NEXT UP: 9/06 – at #20 Mason (0-2).
