Blitz 5 Top 25: Week 5

Things are heating up in the Blitz 5 Top 25 presented by TriStateFootball.com. With league play hitting its stride and intensity is in the air. Every win becomes more meaningful and precious as teams jockey for playoff seedings.

There are seven games that will see ranked teams face off this week including a pair of Top 10 battles as #1 Moeller is at rival #4 St. Xavier and #3 Lakota West hits the road to take on #10 Middletown. Just outside of that realm has #5 Anderson welcoming in #11 Kings, #3 Princeton hosting #21 Mason, #14 Milford traveling to #24 West Clermont, #16 Covington Catholic hosting #23 Beechwood and #17 Lakota East heading to #19 Fairfield.

Here’s the Blitz 5 Top 25 for Week 5:

1. Moeller (3-1) – LAST WEEK: lost to Mallard Creek (NC)(2-1), 21-14, OT. The Crusaders get a “Mulligan” with the opponent fiasco for last Saturday’s game. They stay atop the poll, despite the loss. NEXT UP: 9/20 – at #4 St. Xavier (3-1).

2. Princeton (3-1, 3-0) – LAST WEEK: won at #17 Lakota East (2-2, 2-1), 17-16. The Phoenix appears to be rising from the ashes. The Vikings have now won 12 straight GMC contests. NEXT UP: 9/20 – #21 MASON (1-3, 1-2).

3. Lakota West (3-1, 2-1) – LAST WEEK: beat #19 Fairfield (2-2, 2-1), 50-14. Things don’t get any easier for the Firebirds who will face their fifth straight Top 25 opponent to start the season. NEXT UP: 9/20 – at #10 Middletown (4-0, 3-0).

4. St. Xavier (3-1) – LAST WEEK: beat Withrow (0-4), 31-7. The next four teams on the schedule are a combined 13-3 and include the other three GCL South schools. NEXT UP: 9/20 – #1 Moeller (3-1).

5. Anderson (4-0, 3-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Lebanon (2-2, 1-2), 41-7. The Raptors have a 48.0 point average margin of victory (52.0 to 4.0). They have outscored their opponents 166-7 in the first half. NEXT UP: 9/20 – #11 KINGS (3-1, 2-1).

6. Winton Woods (4-0, 3-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Turpin (2-2,1-2), 31-0. The Warriors, who are allowing just 3.5 points per contest, will play teams that are a combined 2-10 over their next three games. NEXT UP: 9/20 – Walnut Hills (1-3, 0-3).

7. Cooper (4-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Campbell County (1-3), 42-0. A Jaguars defense that is giving up just 5.0 points per game with two shutouts, will be tested versus a Great Crossing offense that averages 46.2 points per tilt. NEXT UP: 9/20 – GREAT CROSSING (4-0).

8. Elder (3-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at St. Edward (2-1), 24-17. The Panthers final six foes on the slate are currently a combined 18-4.  NEXT UP: 9/20 – LOUISVILLE ST. XAVIER (2-1).

9. La Salle (4-0) – LAST WEEK: beat Louisville Central (KY)(1-3), 7-6. The gritty Lancers are allowing just 7.75 points per game and haven’t given up more than 12 points in a contest. NEXT UP: 9/20 – at Withrow (0-4).

10. Middletown (4-0, 3-0) – LAST WEEK: beat Sycamore (0-4, 0-3), 36-0. The biggest tests are still ahead for the Middies. We are getting ready to see how they will handle playing in big games, something that hasn’t happened since 2011.  NEXT UP: 9/20 – #3 Lakota West (3-1, 2-1).

11. Kings (3-1, 2-1) – LAST WEEK: beat then #25 West Clermont (2-2, 1-2), 28-10. The Knights have been stellar against the run allowing just 70.5 yards per game, now they get the ultimate test versus Anderson’s passing attack. NEXT UP: 9/20 – at #5 Anderson (4-0, 3-0).

12. Ryle (3-1) – LAST WEEK: beat then #9 Highlands (3-1), 34-28, OT. Head coach Mike Engler collects his 82nd win at Ryle making him the programs winningest coach. NEXT UP: 9/20 – at Christian Academy-Louisville (3-1).

13. Highlands (3-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at then #13 Ryle (3-1), 34-28, OT. The 34 points that the Bluebirds gave up to Ryle were the most by the team in the last 13 games. NEXT UP: 9/20 – RACELAND (1-2).

14. Milford (3-1, 2-1) – LAST WEEK: beat Loveland (0-4, 0-3), 19-12. Head coach Tom Grippa collects his 54th win at Milford making him the programs winningest coach. NEXT UP: 9/20 – at #24 West Clermont (2-2, 2-1).

15. Harrison (4-0) – LAST WEEK: at Western Hills (0-4), 49-0. Junior Preston Flick has touched the ball 20 times on offense, racking up 276 yards (166 rec, 110 rush) with eight trips to the end zone (four rec, four rush). NEXT UP: 9/20 – at Clinton-Massie (2-2).

16. Covington Catholic (2-2) – LAST WEEK: won at Dixie Heights (1-3), 47-28. The Colonels have 708 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing during their modest two-game winning streak. NEXT UP: 9/20 – #23 BEECHWOOD (4-0).

17. Lakota East (2-2, 2-1) – LAST WEEK: lost to #2 Princeton (3-1, 3-0), 17-16. The GMC is giving the Thunderhawks much R-E-S-P-E-C-T. East is vastly improved over last season’s 1-9 squad. The best is still ahead in Liberty Township. NEXT UP: 9/20 – at #19 Fairfield (2-2, 1-2).

18. Hamilton (2-2, 2-1) – LAST WEEK: won at #21 Mason (1-2, 1-1), 7-3. A slumbering Big Blue offense is averaging just 11.5 points per game. NEXT UP: 9/20 – OAK HILLS (2-2, 1-2).

19. Fairfield (2-2, 2-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at #3 Lakota West (3-1, 2-1), 50-14. The first of five straight games against Top 25 teams did not go very well for the Indians. The upcoming schedule is challenging but loaded with opportunities. NEXT UP: 9/20 – #17 LAKOTA EAST (2-2, 2-1).

20. East Central (2-2) – LAST WEEK: beat Franklin County (2-2, 0-2), 49-13. Sophomore running back Ryan Minges ran for 261 yards with 14 runs of 10-yards or more against Franklin County. NEXT UP: 9/20 – BATESVILLE (4-0).

21. Mason (1-3, 1-2) – LAST WEEK: lost to #18 Hamilron (2-2, 2-1), 7-3. The struggling Comets offense has only found the end zone four times. NEXT UP: 9/20 – at #2 Princeton (3-1, 3-0).

22. Badin (2-2) – LAST WEEK: won at Bishop Ready (1-3), 21-14. Defense hasn’t failed the Rams. They have held all four foes to 15 points or less. NEXT UP: 9/20 – at Hughes (2-2).

23. Beechwood (4-0) – LAST WEEK: at Simon Kenton (2-2), 35-23. A potent Tigers offensive attack is averaging 417.25 yards of total offense per game. NEXT UP: 9/20 – at #16 Covington Catholic (2-2).

24. West Clermont (2-2, 2-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at then #12 Kings (3-1, 2-1). The Wolves are averaging just 15.25 points per game with an average margin of defeat of 12.75 points. NEXT UP: 9/20 – #14 Milford (3-1, 2-1).

25. Mount Healthy (3-1) – LAST WEEK: beat then #22 Taft (3-1), 20-16. Three straight wins for the Owls after dropping the opener to #24 West Clermont. NEXT UP: 9/20 – at  Bishop Fenwick (2-2).

KNOCKING ON THE DOOR: Batesville, Conner, Lawrenceburg, Lebanon, New Richmond, Oak Hills, Taft and Wyoming
