Despite mother nature’s best attempts to foil the evening, there was still great action across the city on Friday night, including two heavyweight matchups from the GCL South.
NO. 4 ST. XAVIER 22, NO. 8 ELDER 17
Explosive plays on both sides of the ball was the calling card for this matchup between two GCL South heavyweights, with St. X coming out on top of Elder, 22-17.
It was St. X’s do-it-all star Daniel Vollmer who put the game on ice, as the junior wide receiver hauled in a 58-yard catch-and-run from senior quarterback Chase Herbstreit late in the fourth quarter.
Vollmer had 87 yards and a touchdown rushing, while additionally having 65 yards and a touchdown in yet another impressive performance from the junior. Herbstreit grinded out a tough performance from under center, throwing for 84 yards and a touchdown, in addition to 40 yards rushing on the ground.
Elder’s sophomore quarterback Kaden Estep put up solid numbers in the loss, throwing for 194 yards and a touchdown, respectively. Senior safety Joey DiTullio also had a 74-yard pick-six of Herbstreit.
NO. 1 MOELLER 38, NO. 9 LA SALLE 0
Moeller was able to extend their early lead on the rest of the GCL South Conference with another convincing win, this time over the previously undefeated LaSalle Lancers. It was the Matt Ponatoksi show once again, as the sophomore quarterback threw for 228 yards and three touchdowns.
Senior wideout Matt Fogler had a career night for the Crusaders, hauling in 3 receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow senior wide receiver Jordan Love had 59 yards on 4 receptions and a touchdown as well.
The Crusaders established themselves as the team to beat in the GCL South defensively as well, as Moeller held the LaSalle offense to just 142 yards on the evening, in addition to forcing a turnover.
NO. 10 MIDDLETOWN 50, NO. 13 LAKOTA EAST 23
With both sides needing a win, it was the Lakota East Thunderhawks who used an impressive all-around performance, racking up 406 yards of total offense and 3 turnovers in the 50-23 victory over Middletown.
Senior quarterback Jamison Kitna continued his streak of solid performances from under center for the Thunderhawks, throwing for 196 yards and two touchdowns. Kitna was able to find his most reliable target, junior tight end PJ MacFarlane, 5 times for 69 yards and a touchdown. Junior wideout Zion Neal caught the ball once, and took it 42 yards for a score as well.
East halfback Ryder Hooks was able to find success as well, as the junior picked up 78 yards and three total touchdowns on the ground.
