NKY Round-Up: Cooper claims Battle of Union

CovCath picked up their first win of the season in impressive fashion and Cooper stayed undefeated. We recap that and more action from the Bluegrass state in our Week 3 NKY Round-Up.

NO. 7 COOPER 21, NO. 13 RYLE 14
The Cooper Jaguars held off the Ryle Raiders in the battle of Union, KY on Friday night. With the win the Jaguars keep their undefeated season intact and hand the Raiders their first loss of the season. The defense stepped up big for Cooper as they held the Ryle offense in check for most of the game. Ryker Campbell had two interceptions to lead the defensive charge as they were able to slow down Nathan Verax and company.

Cooper quarterback Cam O’Hara rushed for a score and passed for another in the win as he completed 26-of-40 passes for 354 yards. Jaidan Combs was on the receiving end of a wild scramble and pass from O’Hara for a big score. Jacob Savage scored a touchdown for the Raiders. Verax also connected with Dylan Lee for a score late in the game as they attempted a comeback. A two-point conversion tied the game with just over three minutes remaining.

After a fumbled punt, the Jaguars were in prime position and O’Hara found Isaiah Johnson for the winning score.

NO. 18 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 42, SIMON KENTON 3
Covington Catholic came out with purpose in their game against Simon Kenton and gave the Pioneers no hope in a big blowout win. The Colonels jumped out early and never looked back as they picked up their first win on the season. The defense did an excellent job in shutting down SK. Tate Kruer was a big part of the defensive performance as he was the leader on that side of the ball. The Colonels did not allow a touchdown.

On offense the Colonels got contributions from a number of players on their big offensive night. Dylan Gaiser rushed for three touchdowns as he paced the ground attack with a number of huge runs. He scored on runs of 38, 71, and 40 yards respectively on the night as he was essentially unstoppable as he finished with 210 yards on 14 carries. Quarterback Cash Harney had 234 total yards of offense and a touchdown of his own in the win.

The Colonels improved to 1-2 and avoided their first 0-3 start since 2015 with the win.

NO. 25 BEECHWOOD 41, DIXIE HEIGHTS 20
Beechwood jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead and never looked back as they pulled away from Dixie Heights for a win. The Tigers offense was up to its usual tricks as they continued to put up big points. Clay Hayden led the offense from his quarterback position with precision passing and great leadership. Hayden threw two touchdowns in the first half as Chase Flaherty accounted for the other.

Luke Erdman caught three touchdowns on the night as he was the favorite target of Hayden during the blowout win. Erdman kept getting behind the defense and was an impossible cover all night. The Tigers improved to 3-0.
