NKY Round-Up: Cooper downs Highlands
- Updated: September 28, 2024
On a wet and rainy Saturday, multiple big time matchups in Kentucky High School Football took place, including a closely contested matchup between two top-25 teams.
NO. 7 COOPER 24, NO. 12 HIGHLANDS 21
The weather may have left the field damp, but the play on the field between these two teams wasn’t dampened in the slightest. On the opening kickoff, Cooper’s senior wide receiver Jaiden Combs took it back 95-yards to get the Jaguars on the board early and the Jaguars never relinquished the lead.
Both defenses took advantage of the weather conditions to force multiple turnovers each, but it was Cooper who struck again with a big play in the second quarter; junior quarterback Cam O’Hara found his tight end Austin Alexander, and the junior took it 61 yards for the touchdown.
Despite being down two scores early, Highlands fought back with two passing touchdowns, including one to senior wideout Adam Surrey, to continue to cut into Cooper’s lead. The Jaguars were able to run the ball effectively and close out the win with a rushing touchdown by junior tailback Keegan Maher. Cooper’s win brings them to 6-0 for the first time since 2012.
NO. 19 HARRISON 49, CAMPBELL COUNTY 14
It was all Harrison in their matchup against Campbell County on early Saturday afternoon, with the Wildcats offense rolling to four rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns on the Camels defense.
Harrison’s offensive playmakers all got in on the rushing success, with senior quarterback Dickie Engel, senior tailback Cole Koops and junior running back Preston Flick all scoring rushing touchdowns. Flick was able to find the endzone four different times, and Koops continued his impressive season by taking his respective touchdown 40 yards to the house.
Engel had an impressive all-around performance, also throwing for two touchdowns, both to Flick. One went for 28-yards, and the other was for 26-yards. Harrison’s defense also had a scoop-and-score to pile onto their domination of Campbell County.
The Camels found some success through the air, as junior Lucas Anthrop had two passing touchdowns on the afternoon, and they also forced a few turnovers of the Harrison offense. In the end however, Harrison’s all-around impressive performance was too much for the Camels to overcome.
