Springfield downs Miamisburg
- Updated: September 14, 2024
SPRINGFIELD, oh – A banged up Springfield squad showed the grit you would expect from a team that has won five straight regional titles. It was “next man up” for the Wildcats in their win over Miamisburg and the second straight victory for the Cats.
Junior Tre Montgomery ran for the first two touchdowns of his career as Springfield built a 13-3 lead after one quarter. Classmate Sherrod Lay, Jr. returned a kickoff 85-yards for a touchdown as the Wildcats built a 20-6 lead going into intermission.
Miamisburg kicker Reece Hammond connected on his third field goal to cut the lead to 20-9 in the third quarter. It would be the final points of the night for the Vikings. Hammond’s three-pointers weren’t “cheapies.” He hit from 36, 38 and 42-yards.
Springfield exploded for 20 unanswered fourth quarter points to seal Miamisburg’s fate. The Wildcats defense was the real story. They have held every opponent to 16 points or less to start the season, including just seven fourth quarter points.
