Fairmont outlasts Springfield
- Updated: October 19, 2024
SPRINGFIELD, oh – In a pivotal late-season matchup between two of the top teams in the GWOC, it was the Fairfield Falcons who outlasted the Springfield Wildcats on a late Logan Doty touchdown.
Down three with 50 seconds left in the contest, Fairmont’s offense engineered a game-winning drive to knock off the hosting Springfield. Sophomore Logan Doty followed his blockers from the triple-I formation into the endzone with just 15 seconds remaining. After breaking the plane, Doty lost the football, and the Wildcats celebrated.
However, it was the Falcons who were able to celebrate as it was not ruled a fumble. Fairmont moved to 5-1 in conference play, and remains tied for the conference’s top spot with the Centerville Elks. Fairmont has never won a GWOC title, and is just one win away from at least a share of the top prize.
An even matchup provided a healthy contest between the two squads, respectfully. Springfield was more potent on the offensive side of the ball, out gaining Fairmont 392 yards to 211. Fairmont can thank its defense for slowing down the Wildcat offense when it counted, including 2 forced turnovers, which proved to be pivotal when the game ended with Fairmont on top.
For Fairmont, they used the rushing attack to gain most of their yards. 158 of the 211 total were on the ground, with Doty finding the endzone twice. Senior quarterback Brock Baker only threw the ball three times, but completed all three for 53 yards through the air.
Springfield found more success through the air, as senior QB Brent Upshaw had 172 yards through the air and 2 touchdowns. Halfback Deontre Long additionally added 170 yards on the ground, respectfully.
Fairmont will look to finally win its first GWOC title when they host Beavercreek. Springfield will look to rebound in a short-week road trip to Northmont on Thursday night.
