St. X shuts down La Salle
- Updated: October 12, 2024
CINCINNATI, oh – In a slugfest defensive battle, St. X shut down the LaSalle offensive attack, defeating the Lancers 9-0 in the 2024 “King of the Road” rivalry game.
The first half of play saw the Bombers deploy a new offense, with junior Daniel Vollmer manning the helm at quarterback over senior QB Chase Herbstriet.
LaSalle wasn’t fooled by St. X’s new-look offense, however, gaining control of the trenches early and often, forcing the Bombers to punt on each of their first two drives.
Neither team could move the ball offensively early, as the Bombers were the first team to pick up a first down, with just 3:53 left in the opening quarter.
St. X was able to pound the rock down to LaSalle’s 9, setting up first-and-goal. Vollmer connected with his junior running back Jake Britt at the goal line, but the Lancers stopped Britt short.
A pass interference on St. X combined with the Lancer defensive stop forced the Bombers to kick a field goal. Sophomore Owen Davidson put the first points on the board, giving St. X a n early 3-0 lead.
The remainder of the first half saw a Sayre Smothers interception of Vollmer, and both teams went to the locker room with 3-0 still on the scoreboard.
For a majority of the second half, it was back and forth with the punting units, respectfully, as neither St. X or LaSalle could manage a drive longer than 15 yards.
St. X junior linebacker Kobe Clapper continued his impressive play this season with yet another game-wrecking performance. Clapper had 16 total tackles, including two sacks and three tackles for loss.
It wasn’t until late in the fourth quarter that St. X found momentum on offense. With Herbstriet back under center, the Bombers found success running the football.
LaSalle managed to force the Bomber offense into a third-and-long, but a pass interference call set up a 31-yard touchdown throw from Herbstriet to junior Cameron Taylor. Taylor was wide open on a crossing route, and backed into the end zone to put the Bombers up 9-0, all but putting the game on ice.
McLaughlin and LaSalle put together an impressive response throwing the football, but the Bombers defense held, forcing four straight incompletions at their own goal line and ending the game.
Despite the low-score, the game came down to which offense found the end zone first, and it was the Bombers who safely landed for six and a hard fought conference road win.
Herbstreit and Vollmer shared snaps at quarterback, with Herbstriet guided the winning drive. The senior went 4-6 for 60 yards and a touchdown. Vollmer was the Bombers leading rusher, with 41 yards on 13 attempts.
LaSalle out gained St. X in total yards, 202-196, but were unable to find the endzone. McLaughlin threw for 139 yards with 14 completions.
