Cincinnati Round-Up: Bombers pull upset

The Bombers and Firebirds engaged in another postseason classic, and Anderson continued their dominance in our Cincinnati Round-Up.

DIVISION I, REGION 4

NO. 6 ST. XAVIER 16, NO. 2 LAKOTA WEST 13

Lakota West’s comeback came up short on Friday night as the St. Xavier Bombers held on for a 16-13 win on Friday night. The Bombers jumped out to a 16-0 halftime lead and were able to do just enough on the defensive end in the second half to pull out the win. Chase Herbstreit and Daniel Vollmer scored touchdowns for the Bombers who also got a defensive safety in the first half.

POSTGAME INTERVIEW: Steve Specht, St. Xavier

The Firebirds came out in the second half and attempted to turn the tables. Luka Gilbert scored on a 5-yd rec from Sam Wiles and Braydon Johnson rushed for a 4-yard score to get the Firebirds back into the ballgame. The two defensive units got stop after stop in a back-and-forth defensive battle in the second half. The Firebirds had a chance to tie the game with seconds remaining but missed a 49-yard field goal. The Bombers advance to face league rival Moeller in the regional final.

The Anderson Raptors jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead and never looked back as they cruised into a third straight regional final appearance by dismantling Mount Healthy on Friday night. Durrell Turner rushed for four touchdowns in the first half alone to help build the lead. Turner scored on runs of 1, 6, 60, and 74 as he put up a dazzling first half. Quarterback Justice Burnam also rushed for a score in the first half. 

The Raptors induced the running clock to start the second half of play, Burnam also connected with his favorite target Trace Jallick for a touchdown pass halfway through the third quarter. Anderson was never threatened, and they advance to face La Salle in the regional final next Friday night.

Anna jumped out to a 21-0 lead and cruised to a win over Cincinnati Country day on Friday night. The Rockets advanced to face Coldwater next week in the regional final. Zach Osburn rushed for three touchdowns as the Nighthawks could not keep him out of the endzone. The Rockets led 42-7 at the half and were able to push their way to victory with the running clock in place.
