Middies lose heartbreaker to Wayne
- Updated: November 2, 2024
HUBER HEIGHTS, Oh. – It was a tale of two halves for the Middletown Middies in their Ohio Division I, Region 2 playoff opener. Unfortunately, it was the second half that cost them.
In a heartbreaker Friday night, the Blitz 5 #21-ranked Middies fell to Wayne 26-20 in a hard-fought contest at Wayne.
Both squads came into Friday night at 5-5, and seeded #8 and #9 in Ohio Division I, Region 2, so it was expected to be an evenly-matched game. The Warriors kicked off the scoring in the first quarter, as DB Aden Vaughn picked a Jeremiah Landers pass and returned it 56 yards for a score. Isaiah Thompson converted the two-point attempt, and Wayne was off to a 8-0 lead.
That’s how the first quarter would end, but Middletown got back into the game quickly in the second quarter, as Landers drove the Middies down the field and punched it into the end zone from one yard out to make the score 8-7. Wayne would bump that lead to 11-7 after a 30-yard field goal by Caron Limberg, but that lead would soon evaporate as Landers and the Middies would reach the end zone two more times – once on a 2-yard run by Landers and a 7-yard TD pass from Landers to wideout Chandler Shields – to take a 20-11 lead into the half.
Such offensive production for the Middies, however, came to a halt once the teams hit the field for the second half. Wayne’s defense became impenetrable, while their offense got going. The Warriors would close the deficit to two, 20-18, with 3:02 left in the third quarter, on a 10-yard touchdown pass from QB Tyrell Lewis to wide receiver Jamier Averette-Brown.
Meanwhile, Middletown – after an explosive 20-point second quarter – saw their offense stall, in part to two more interceptions tossed by Landers – but the Middies still found themselves ahead by two with less than a minute left, until Wayne’s Isaiah Thompson romped for a 7-yard touchdown with 46 seconds left in regulation to give Wayne a 24-20 lead. The two-point conversion made it 26-20, sealing the victory for the Warriors.
Middletown’s season ends at 5-6, while Wayne moves on to the Ohio Division I, Region 2 second-round to face the region’s #1 seed, Fairmount, who defeated Central Crossing 42-7 Friday night.
