The playoffs got underway in Northern Kentucky on Friday and the contenders quickly separated themselves from the pretenders in many cases.
CLASS 6A
RYLE 39, PLEASURE RIDGE PARK 0
The Raiders picked up their fifth straight win with a 39-0 shutout over the visiting PRP team. Defense was the name of the game as Ryle held the visitors scoreless on their way to a fifth straight running clock win.
Overall, Ryle has now won seven of their last eight games and are peaking at the right time. The competition will pick up, the Raiders appear to be up for the challenge.
With the victory Ryle will now host St. Xavier next week in a huge Class 6A tilt in Union.

CLASS 5A
HIGHLANDS 45, COLLINS 0
Tayden Lorenzen rushed for three first-half touchdowns to pace the Bluebirds past Collins in the opening round of the KHSAA Class 5A playoffs. Highlands used a balanced offensive attack, finishing with 336 total yards. Gabe Williams led all receivers with 58 yards while Adam Surrey led the ground attack with 50 yards rushing.
The shutout marked the fifth time in 12 games this season that Highlands’ defense has held their opponents off the scoreboard. In their nine wins the Bluebirds have ceded a grand total of 56 points.
Up next the Bluebirds will face off against Woodford County on the road, who knocked off Dixie Heights in Round 1.

CLASS 4A
COVINGTON CATHOLIC 42, BOYD COUNTY 14
The Colonels jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead on what was a milestone moment in program history. Dylan Gaiser had four touchdown runs in the win and eclipsed the 1000-yard rushing mark for the season.
Gaiser finished the game with 236 yards on just 8 carries. He also had one of the team’s three interceptions on the night in victory.
The two-way star joins quarterback Cash Harney in the 1000-yard club, marking the first time in CovCath history that the Colonels have had a pair of 1000-yard rushers. Harney is also the first player in school history to pass and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season.
