With five teams from the Northern Kentucky area battling for the opportunity to play for a state title, all eyes were on the teams across the river to see which ones would come out on top of their respective games; including one contest between two bitter rivals.
CLASS 6A
RYLE 35, GREAT CROSSING 7
It was all Ryle in their state semifinal game against the Great Crossing Warhawks. The Raiders have been one of the teams to beat in Northern Kentucky all season, and they proved their one of the teams to beat in the entire state after their impressive win on Friday night.
Jacob Savage has been the bellcow for the Ryle Raiders offense all season, and he proved why once again in the Raiders huge win over the visiting Warhawks. Quarterback Nathan Verax was also successful, running a potent offensive attack for the Raiders that the Warhawks had no answer for.
Despite the score line, the Great Crossing defense did everything they could to stop the Ryle offense, even putting the Raiders in multiple 4th down situations. The problem was that the Raiders offense converted every single one of them.
With an offense as consistent as the one Ryle has, they will be a tough out in the Class 5A State Championship game, where they will face Louisville’s Trinity High School.
CLASS 5A
COOPER 61, HIGHLANDS 23
RECAP: Cooper get past Highlands, back to state finals
CLASS 4A
FRANKLIN COUNTY 14, COVINGTON CATHOLIC 10
It was primarily a defensive matchup between Covington Catholic and Franklin County on Friday evening, as both defensive units used the cold weather and unfavorable conditions to their advantage.
Trailing 10-7 in the fourth quarter, the Franklin County Flyers offense found the success they had been searching for all night, utilizing the run game with tailback Delano Collins to gain control of the line of scrimmage, and the game. Collins dove into the endzone from 6-yards out to give Franklin their first lead of the game.
The Flyers never gave the lead up from that point on, despite the Colonels best efforts. The game came down to the final seconds with Covington Catholic driving into the Flyer’s end of the field. Covington Catholic found themselves on Franklin’s 14 yard-line with just 6.8 seconds left in the game.
Covington Catholic’s season came down to just one play, and it fell incomplete. Despite the loss, Cov Cath had a season to remember, storming back from an 0-2 start in September to the state semifinals.
CLASS 2A
BEECHWOOD 44, LEXINGTON CHRISITAN 24
For almost a decade, Class 2A in Kentucky has been owned by the Beechwood Tigers. In the year 2024, that is no different, as the Tigers rolled past Lexington Christian 44-24.
Sophomore Nathan Pabst and senior Chase Flaherty led the way for the Tigers on the ground, as the sophomore tailback found the endzone twice on the night; once for 50 yards, and the second for 62. The senior Flaherty also found the endzone twice.
Senior wideout Luke Erdman was another key contributor for Beechwood, as he hauled in multiple tough catches, including one down the sidelines late in the first half, while also tacking on a 34-yard touchdown catch from Clay Hayden.
Hayden, the star senior quarterback for Beechwood, came into the evening looking to make history and join Kentucky’s all-time elite, needing just 2 touchdown passes to tie for 10th all-time in Kentucky High School football history. While Hayden only had one touchdown pass, he still has a chance in the state final next week, when Beechwood looks for yet another state title.
The Tigers will play Owensboro Catholic in the Class 2A state championship at Kroger Field in Lexington.
