Avon too good for Anderson

CANTON, Ohio – On a snow glazed field with flakes coming down through a blustery wind all game long, Avon quarterback Nolan Good found a way to make the most of the conditions, leading the Eagles to their first ever state championship. The senior and Kent State commit, ran for 190 yards on 19 carries, threw for 149 yards with a rushing and a passing touchdown and handed Anderson its first loss of the year and its bid for a second state crown.
At times, the game wasn’t pretty but it had the elements that you want in a classic championship battle. Two District Player of the Year’s at quarterback, whose performances didn’t disappoint. Both offenses converted 60% of their third down opportunity and combined to go 4-7 on fourth down conversions. Yet, each team shot itself in the foot twice, with untimely turnovers but no one capitalized on the miscues, by turning them into points.
With all that back-and-forth, Anderson got the ball for one final drive, at its own three-yard line, 4:28 left on the clock and down by seven points. The Raptors marched 75 yards down to the Avon 22-yard line. The 19 play drive would end as Burnam threw a fourth down pass into the end zone, to Trace Jallick that would be broken up by the Eagles Aiden Atkins as time expired.
Anderson came into the game with 713 points, seventh most in a season in Ohio history. Avon held them to a season low 13 points. It was the 14th time this season that the Eagles have held an opponent to 14 points or less. As great as Good was, the defense deserves accolades for bending but not breaking which included a gritty goal line stand to start the fourth quarter that could have tied the game.

Raptors signal-caller Justice Burnam was impressive running for a career high 150 yards, throwing for 148 yards with a rushing and a passing touchdown. He finished the season with 4,134 yards passing, 876 yards on the ground and 58 touchdowns (42 pass, 16 rush).
