Elder tops Covington Catholic

Elder’s persistent ground attack led the way for the Panthers in a close 28-20 win over Kentucky-based Covington Catholic in this top-25 based matchup.

CINCINNATI, Ohio – After an easy win over Mt. Zion Prep (MI), the Elder Panthers found themselves in a close battle with their Kentucky-based foe Covington Catholic, who were looking to rebound after a close 26-20 loss to Ryle in week one.

Elder found themselves down early 3-0 after a solid drive by senior Colonels quarterback Cash Harney and the Covington Catholic offense.

However, the Panthers found success running the ball early and often, leaning on junior quarterback Kaden Estep and senior tailback Tommy Becker’s legs.

Estep was able to find a crease in the defense throughout the first quarter, rumbling twenty yards to the house, a huge response to the Colonels, taking a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter.

After the Panthers defense held strong, they were able to pound away down the field to another rushing touchdown by Estep, this time a 33-yard scamper into the endzone.

The Colonels were able to mount yet another methodical, time-consuming drive in response however; something that has become a calling card for Harney and the Covington Catholic offense in this early season.
