KHSAA Playoff Recap: First Round

The opening round of the Kentucky high school football playoffs kicked off Friday night, and most Northern Kentucky teams had convincing wins to keep their seasons alive.

CLASS 6A

SIMON KENTON 31, OLDHAM COUNTY 9

Simon Kenton led the entire game, winning in convincing fashion Friday night in Independence over Oldham County.

The Pioneers took an early 7-0 lead on a 3-yard-run by Landon Brown, and never relinquished on their way to a 31-9 victory over the Colonels.

Simon Kenton QB Grayson Harris hit wideout Forest Hughes on a 65-yard TD bomb, and RBs Jason Rabe and Landon Brown each added rushing touchdowns in the victory.

CLASS 5A

COOPER 28, SOUTH OLDHAM 14

After starting the season 0-2, the Cooper Jaguars are starting to resemble their 2024 squad, which went all the way to Lexington and the Kentucky 5A state title game.

The Jaguars opened the 2025 postseason Friday night with a convincing 28-14 victory over South Oldham. Cooper took the lead early in the first quarter on a 22-yard TD pass from Cam O’Hara to Colton Graham, and they would lead the remainder of the game. O’Hara would toss two touchdown passes, and run for another score, as the Jaguars move to the second round.

CLASS 4A

COVINGTON CATHOLIC 48, BOYD COUNTY 21

Covington Catholic stormed in the second round of the Kentucky 4A playoffs with a 48-21 rout of Boyd County Friday night.

The Colonels led 34-0 at the half, spurred by RB Dylan Gaiser’s two rushing touchdowns, and extended that lead in the second half on two touchdown passes by QB Dylan Courtney.

Covington Catholic moves on to face undefeated Johnson Central next Friday.
