OHSAA Playoff Recap: Regional Quarterfinals

The second round of the Ohio high school football playoffs provided some nailbiters, and one major upset, in an exciting Friday night of action.

DIVISION I, REGION 4

No. 2 MOELLER 33, NO. 7 LAKOTA WEST 14

Despite finding themselves in an early deficit, Moeller moved on to the regional semifinals, cruising to a 33-14 victory over Lakota West Friday night.

The Firebirds led 7-0 after the first quarter and 14-12 at the half, and coming off a strong playoff opening victory against Hamilton, seventh-seeded Lakota West had their eyes on an upset.

But the Crusaders – led by quarterback Matt Ponatoski’s three touchdown passes – took over in the second half for the victory. 

Moeller moves on to the regional semifinal  and a battle against Greater Catholic League rival St. Xavier, which Lakota West finishes 7-5.

DIVISION I, REGION 2

No. 1 MIDDLETOWN 31, NO. 8 LEBANON 0

Middletown put all of Division I, Region 2 on notice Friday night, blanking a good Lebanon squad 31-0 to move on to the regional semifinal.

The bye week had no effect on the Middies, as they took a 10-0 lead into halftime and put the game away with a 14-point fourth quarter.  

Middletown will face fifth-seed Springfield next Friday, as the Wildcats pulled off the upset over fourth-seed Springboro.

DIVISION II, REGION 8

NO. 7 HARRISON 35, No. 2 KINGS 31

Harrison held on for the upset victory in the fog Friday night over second-seeded Kings to move to the Division II, Region 8 semifinal for the second straight year.

POSSTGAME INTERVIEW: Derek Rehage, Harrison

Wildcat QB Brady Lawhon, in the fog, connected on a 52-yard TD pass to Christian Roether to put Harrison up by four with just over 3 minutes remaining. The Knights took the ensuring possession and drove to the Harrison 1-yard-line, but were stopped there as time expired, giving the Wildcats the win.

Harrison moves on to face Trotwood-Madison next Friday in the regional semifinal.
