Covington Catholic responded to its first loss in more than a month with a convincing performance Friday night, pulling away from Central for a 41-14 victory.
Coming off last week’s loss to Beechwood, the Colonels (4-2) leaned heavily on their ground game. CovCath rushed for 235 yards on 36 carries, averaging 6.5 yards per attempt, and scored four of its six touchdowns on the ground.
Kiyan Miller led the way with a huge night, rushing for four touchdowns. Miller opened the scoring with a 19-yard run and added TD runs of 2, 14 and 28 yards.
Quarterback Dylan Courtney provided the balance through the air. Courtney connected with Brandon Smith for a 12-yard touchdown early in the second quarter and found Jamir Kirtley for a 19-yard score with 32 seconds remaining before halftime, sending the Colonels into the break with a 20-6 advantage.
CovCath then took control after halftime, scoring 21 unanswered points to stretch its lead to 41-6. The Colonels finished with 325 yards of offense, held Central to 171 and recorded three sacks.
The win gets CovCath back on track heading into one of Northern Kentucky’s biggest games of the season, a Week 7 showdown with red-hot Highlands.
