Springfield shuts out Centerville, Elks fall to 0-5

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – For a second straight week Springfield has put together complete games to start GWOC play after an 0-3 non-conference beginning to 2025. The Wildcats defense pitched its second straight shutout, forcing winless Centerville into five turnovers. On offense, the Cats have churned out a balanced 370 yards in back-to-back weeks.

Junior Christopher Wallace threw for career highs of 253 yards and three touchdowns passes, all to senior Sherrod Lay Jr. Deontre Long ran for 120-plus yards for a second game in a row. Long and Lay Jr. have combined for eight touchdowns Springfield modest winning streak. Lay Jr. has had at least six receptions in every game for the Wildcats.

A suffocating Springfield defense has created nine turnovers over the past three contests. The unit has allowed just 58.0 yards rushing in that span.

The reigning Division I, Region 2 regional champion Elks are in a funk. Centerville has been shutout twice in the last three weeks. They are averaging just 8.8 points per game and only 6.0 over the last four weeks.
