Roundup: Cincinnati – Week 3
Loveland 45, Oak Hills 14 – When the going gets tough Loveland (1-2) turns to running back Luke Waddell. The junior answered the call with flying colors at Oak Hills Friday night as the Tigers picked up their first win of the season, 45-14 over the Highlanders. Waddell ran for a career high 381 yards on 19 carries with five touchdowns. His scoring runs were of 74, 60, 54, 47 and 48 yards. Loveland finished the game with 520 yards of total offense of which 487 yards were on the ground. Oak Hills quarterback Jacob Woycke threw the ball a school record 72 times for 402 yards and two touchdowns. Unfortunately the sophomore was picked off six times by the Tigers. Ryan Batsch had three interceptions for the victors. Loveland can put itself right back in the playoff hunt if they can knock off unbeaten Glen Este next Friday night.
Milford 42, Norwood 25 – Milford (2-1) junior RB Dawson Slone rushed for a career-high 166 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Eagles won for the second straight week, knocking off Norwood by a 42-26 score on Friday night at soggy Shea Stadium. The Eagles piled up 432 yards of total offense in route to their second straight win. Milford returns to the gridiron next Friday, opening Eastern Cincinnati Conference play at home against Withrow – Shawn Sell, Milford.
Reading 17, Summit Country Day 7 – Reading is off to its best start since 2006. Neriah Brooks got things started when he returned the opening kickoff 95-yards to give the Blue Devils a lead they would never relinquish. It was the first loss of the season for Summit Country Day (2-1). The Silver Knights were held to just 170 yards of total offense including just 45 yards on the ground. Baden Pinson scored the other Reading touchdown. He had 126 yards rushing on 26 carries. The Blue Devils open Cincinnati Hills League play next week at Deer Park (1-2).
CHL Makes Non-Conference Noise – Four of the eight teams in the Cincinnati Hills League will head into conference play next Friday night with four of its team a perfect 3-0 versus non-conference competition. Madeira is a one-point loss away from being in that group. The CHL wastes little time in showcasing the league’s talent as unbeaten Indian hill and Wyoming square off in the marquee match up to start conference play.
Williamsburg 42, Amelia 13 – Very rarely do you see a Division VI school knock off a Division II squad but that is just what happened on the east side Friday night. Williamsburg (2-1) pounded the bigger Amelia Barons running for 450 yards. Dawson Davis (165), Kurt Meisberger (113) and Spencer Clowery (108) all ran for more than 100 yards for the Wildcats. Dawson found the end zone three times, Clowery twice and Meisberger once.
Badin 41, Edgewood 14 – For a third straight week Badin (3-0) defeats a team from a larger division. The Rams who are TriStateFootball.com’s top ranked team in Division IV-VII poll took care of Division II rival Edgewood (2-1) using a stingy defense and a polished and balanced offense. As usual Cody Boxrucker made his presence felt on both sides of the ball for the winners. He ran for 147 yards on three touchdowns. On defense Boxrucker recorded five tackles and had an interceptions and a fumble recovery. Senior classmate Philip Dozier had nine receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown. Badin will start GCL Co-eds play by hosting unbeaten Roger Bacon next Saturday night at Virgil Schwarm Stadium on the campus of Hamilton High School.
SWOC Struggles Out of the Gate – After sending four of its seven teams to the playoffs a year ago the Southwest Ohio Conference finds itself limping into league play. Northwest is the only SWOC team that remains perfect after three weeks. Ross and Edgewood are the only other teams in the conference with winning records sitting at 2-1. Neither of those squads made the playoffs in 2014. Talawanda is 0-3 after making the post-season while Mount Healthy finds itself on a two game losing streak for the first time since 2011.
Aiken Sheds Losing Ways – It took just three weeks for new Aiken (2-1) head coach Jeremy Pflug to do what his predecessor’s couldn’t over the previous 31 games heading into this season. Pflug lead the Falcons to their second victory of the season. The team started this campaign with just one win since October 21st, 2011.
