Schedule Sneak Peek: Mason

This will be the 10th season of football in the Greater Miami Conference for Mason. The first three campaigns weren’t so hot as the Comets went a combined 8-22 overall and 6-15 in GMC play. At that point the program was looking for a new direction and hired Brian Castner to be its head coach. The Comets wasted little time in turning the corner onto “Respectability Street” under their new front man.

Mason has had only one losing season, been to the playoffs twice and won 11 of its last 14 league games under Castner. They are 36-26 overall and 26-16 in GMC action during his tenure.

What a great year to be a player at Mason. The boys in green and white will be on center stage playing in front of big crowds and in great atmospheres.

The Comets start off the 2016 campaign facing Springboro. It will be the third time the two teams have meet in the last 12 games. Mason won last year’s opener but the Panthers got revenge in the first round of the playoffs. Their other two non-conference tilts are at Withrow and the rekindling of a rivalry with Moeller. In GMC play, a three game stretch at Colerain, hosting Fairfield and at Lakota East could make or break this teams postseason chances. Winning two out of three of those affairs is a must.

Here is a look at the 2016 Mason schedule:

Fri – 08/26/16 – SPRINGBORO – 7:00 PM
Fri – 09/02/16 – @Withrow – 7:00 PM
Fri – 09/09/16 – MOELLER – 7:00PM
Fri – 09/16/16 – LAKOTA WEST – 7:00PM
Fri – 09/23/16 – @Hamilton – 7:00PM
Fri – 09/30/16 – @Colerain – 7:00PM
Fri – 10/07/16 – FAIRFIELD – 7:00PM
Fri – 10/14/16 – @Lakota East – 7:00PM
Fri – 10/21/16 – PRINCETON – 7:00PM
Fri – 10/28/16 – @Sycamore – 7:00PM

FINAL TAKE: The schedule provides opportunities to make statements as well as shots at redemption if there are stumbles along the way. Castner refuses to let his program back down from challenges and it has made Mason tougher on the field. Don’t bet against Castner and his crew to answer the call and get to the playoffs in November despite the grueling path. Grit and heart have become a trademark under this head coach.

There are two goals still to be accomplished for the Comets, to win a GMC title and a playoff game. Checking those feats off the list this fall is not going to be easy but every time one counts Mason down or out they respond with flying colors.
