Hoban QB Danny Clark’s 34-yard touchdown run gave the Knights a 30-0 lead, triggering the running clock at the 3:11 mark of the third stanza.

“It’s been a great season. It’s been an amazing run with a bunch of great guys,” said Hoban head coach Tim Tyrell. “Twenty-three seniors that have with all of the adversity, and we had a lot of it, never gave up and never lost sight of the ultimate goal.”

Hoban, who had not given up a second half touchdown all season, held Trotwood-Madison scoreless after averaging 39.5 points during the playoffs. The victory was Knights fourth shutout of the year and second of the postseason.

The Hoban defense accounted for five sacks, had nine tackles-for-a-loss and three interceptions, two by defensive back Matt Salopek.

Both teams got off to a sluggish start thanks to two different off-setting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties during the opening drive. Trotwood-Madison earned a third personal foul penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct on the next play.

Hoban got itself on track when Danny Clark completed a sideline pass to Nate Bauer for 32 yards. On the next play, Todd Sibley ran 49 yards up the middle for a touchdown giving the Knights a 6-0 advantage. Sibley, a University of Pittsburgh recruit, finished with a game high 151 yards rushing.

Trotwood-Madison head coach Jeff Graham admitted after the game that those early penalties took its toll on the his team’s intensity.

“We started the game with a lot of intensity as you could tell with the back-to-back penalties on personal fouls, unsportsmanlike penalties,” said Graham. “That kind of took away some of our intensity.”

Trotwood-Madison quarterback Markell Stephens-Peppers threw a pair of first half interceptions. His second interception came after Hoban’s Nate Adolph defected the pass into the hands of teammate Donny Swain.

Hoban made the Rams pay for this mistake when Clark capped a seven-play drive with a 10-yard pass to his younger brother, tight end Caden Clark.

“That moment was euphoric, it was amazing,” Clark said about throwing the touchdown pass to his brother in a state championship game. “It was the most perfect pass. The most perfect release. The smoothest pass that I’ve ever thrown. It felt so good.”

Clark, a University of Kentucky recruit, finished the game 7-for-10 passing with 165 yards and two touchdown passes.

Clark put more pad onto the Knights cushion with a 60-yard touchdown strike to Garrett Houser with 1:29 left before halftime.

Trotwood-Madison running back Raveion Hargrove was the offensive bright spot for the Rams rushing for 137 yards on 34 carries.
