NKY Round-Up: Week 1
- Updated: August 26, 2017
Week 1 of action is in the books around Northern Kentucky. For many teams, it was their second game of the young season while others were just getting their campaigns kicked off.
Here’s a rundown of how things shook out inside the TSF NKY Team Rankings and beyond.
No. 1 CovCath 48, Lexington Catholic 2
The top-ranked Colonels cruised by the Knights in the second match of the Bluegrass Bowl at LexCath on Friday night. The defense basically pitched a shutout and held the Knights to 208 yards of total offense. Junior Casey McGinness paced the offense with 180 yards and two touchdowns on 18 attempts and classmate Jacob Shriver came up with a pair of sacks on the defensive side of the ball.
No. 2 Simon Kenton 49, Bryan Station 27
Sophomore running back Austin Hammack carried the load for Simon Kenton (2-0), rushing for 228 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Senior quarterback Matt Shearer also registered 192 yards and four touchdowns, including a pair of them to classmate Fisher Hayden, on 12-of-24 passing to guide the Pioneers to a big win on the road.
No. 3 Ryle 34, Henry Clay 28
The Raiders bounced back from a 21-0 halftime deficit to beat Henry Clay. Ryle took advantage of Blue Devils’ turnovers all night long to stay in the game and eventually prevail. The turnaround started with a perfectly executed onside kick out of the locker room. Minutes later Jake Chisholm scored on a 29-yard TD run. Henry Clay returned a short kickoff for a touchdown though on the ensuing possession. Chisolm finished the night with 250 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 30 carries. Burch completed 12 of 23 passes for 158 yards.
No. 4 Beechwood 35, Lloyd 14
After having their scrimmage last week against Louisville Shawnee cancelled, the Tigers looked a bit rusty at times in their season opener, but still cruised to a 21-point road victory against the Juggernauts that included 28 second-quarter points by Beechwood. Senior Brayden Burch 12 of 23 passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
No. 5 Conner 21, Boone County 13
Conner (1-0) held off Boone County at home to open their season. Running back Christian Webster rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on nine carries in the win. The Rebels stayed in the game behind 208 rushing yards of their own.
No. 8 Highlands 27, No. 6 Campbell County 20 (OT)
Highlands took its only lead of the game after regulation play ended on the way to a 27-20 overtime victory over Campbell County at David Cecil Memorial Stadium. It avenged last year’s loss by the Bluebirds to the Camels…COMPLETE RECAP
Scott 42, No. 7 Dixie Heights 27
The Eagles (1-1) rallied back to pick up a nice road win following last week’s tough loss to NewCath. Scott will look for a second win when they meet Holy Cross next Saturday.
Others to note:
NewCath 29, Cooper 7
Defense has led the charge to a 2-0 start for the Thorougbreds as they’ve only ceded 14 points through two games. The Jaguars now fall to 0-2 by 71 to 29 on the season.
Bellevue 47, Dayton 27
The 138th Battle for the Paddle was a lopsided affair for the most part. The series has been lopsided in recent years as the Tigers beat the Greendevils for a 10th straight time on Friday.
