Colerain Extends Streak to 63
- Updated: September 29, 2017
The king of the GMC continued its dominance Friday night when Colerain defeated Mason 36-10 at home. The conference winning streak for Colerain is at 63 straight wins which dates to 2008.
This week it took just over a minute left in the first quarter for Colerain to take the lead and hold the lead for the rest of the game.
Mason jumped to a 3-0 lead after finishing its opening drive with a field goal. Mason’s defense forced Colerain to punt on its opening drive, but that was one of the few times Colerain was stopped.
With just over a minute left in the first quarter, Colerain added points to scoreboard when junior running back J.J. Davis took a pitch from senior quarterback Gunner Leyendecker 35-yards for a touchdown. Kicker Chris Mangold added the extra point to take a 7-3 lead.
After field goal by Chris Mangold, Leyendecker found the endzone on a 10-yard run to extend the lead 16-3 right before halftime.
In the third quarter, the defense started zeroing on Mason quarterback Will Adams. They forced three interceptions, that setup touchdowns. Both Deshawn Pace and Tre Harris recorded interceptions with Harris’ interception leading to a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Dan Bolden to open the lead to 23-3. In the fourth quarter, University of Cincinnati commit Ja’von Hicks took the third interception 32-yards for a touchdown. This was the third straight game Hicks intercepted a pass, but the first touchdown this season.
Colerain has only allowed 24 points in the four conference games.
This is Mason’s first loss since winning the last two conference games against Hamilton and Lakota West. Next week the Comets return home to play Middletown.
Senior Matt Sora scored Mason’s lone touchdown on a 20-yard run in the third quarter. This was Sora’s eighth rushing touchdown on the season.
RECORDS: Mason (4-2), Colerain (4-2)
UP NEXT: Colerain hosts Lakota East (5-1), Mason hosts Middletown (0-6)
