Griffin Merritt’s arm put La Salle in position to win, but his legs carried the Lancers to victory.

Merritt ran in a 1-yard touchdown with 21 seconds remaining to lift La Salle to a 28-24 win over Moeller at Lockland on Friday, giving the Lancers their third straight win over the Crusaders.

The largest lead for either team was seven the entire game.

Five seconds into the second quarter, the Crusaders’ Mitch McKenzie connected with Jack McCracken for a 25-yard TD. That lead held until halftime, but La Salle evened it again when Sam Hildebrand returned the opening kickoff of the third quarter 94 yards.

Moeller went ahead again, this time on a 31-yard field goal by Kevin Thibodeaux.

Josh Whyle caught an 8-yard TD pass from Merritt to give La Salle its first lead, 21-17 with 1:33 remaining in the third quarter.

McCracken’s second touchdown reception put Moeller ahead by three before La Salle’s decisive score in the closing seconds.

Whyle caught nine passes for 85 yards.

McKenzie finished 15 of 24 for 219 yards and two TDs. Watkins rushed 23 times for a game-high 88 yards.
