Southwest District tabs Volpenhein, Oats best in Division II

There were some jaw-dropping, eye-popping, stat sheet-filling performances turned in by this district in 2017.

Anderson quarterback Jay Volpenhein led the way. The senior amassed 4,919 yards of total offense (3,809 passing, 1,110 rushing) and accounted for 52 touchdowns (35 passing, 17 rushing) earning him the 2017 Division II Southwest District offensive player of the year.

Volpenhein threw for 250 yards or more 11 times, had three or more passing touchdowns on eight occasions, accounted for five or more scores in five games, ran for at least 100 yards in seven contests with two or more scores on the ground in six of those affairs for the Redskins who finished the year at 10-2.

Winton Woods star Cris Oats is the 2017 Division II Southwest District defensive player of the year. Oats has helped the Warriors to an 11-1 record and the schools first trip to the regional finals since 2009. He has 83 total tackles, 12 tackles for losses and five takeaways (four fumble recoveries, one interception) on the year.

The senior is one of the premier linebackers in Ohio. Winton Woods head coach Andre Parker, the Southwest District coach of the year, says Oats is “the most gifted player I have ever seen.” Oats has not committed but currently has offers which include Ohio State, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Ole Miss and Cincinnati.
