Mason’s Charlie Sipe Does It Again In Overtime
- Updated: October 26, 2018
Charlie Sipe’s 30-yard field goal in overtimes gives Mason a 24-21 win Friday night at Fairfield.
Sipe’s opportunity in overtime came after Mason blocked a 38-yard field goal on Fairfield first overtime possession. This was the second time this season Sipe won a game for Mason in overtime. He hit a field goal at home against Sycamore to win the game.
Pressure is not part of Sipe’s vocabulary as he forced the game into overtime with his game-tying 42-yard field goal with 23 seconds left in regulation.
It looked like Fairfield was going to win this GMC battle after taking a 21-18 lead with just over a minute left, but Mason quarterback Colin Brown drove the offense down the field to setup the Sipe field goal.
Brown scored late in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run to give Mason a 18-13 lead, but a poor kickoff helped Fairfield return the kick to the 22-yard line. Fairfield quarterback Jeff Tyus found Erick All on a 22-yard touchdown pass to take the 21-18 lead,
Both teams struggled in the sloppy conditions to get the offenses going until the second quarter. Fairfield scored first when Jutahn McClain scored on a 4-yard run. McClain finished the game with 179 yards on 26 carries. He also caught three passes for 17 yards.
Once Fairfield scored, it woke up the Mason offense as Brown found Nick Nehoff on an 80-yard pass. Sipe hit a 27-yard field to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.
Going into Friday night Fairfield was ranked second in Division I, Region 4, and Mason is ranked third. This Mason win could possibly move them to the second seed behind Colerain. This game won’t be the last for these two schools.
