2019 Video Snapshot: Covington Catholic
- Updated: August 20, 2019
It’s next man up at Covington Catholic. There are plenty of players who have bided their time behind some outstanding upperclassmen who went a combined 29-1 over the past two seasons for the Colonels.
So many unknowns make it difficult to predict whether or not CovCath is capable of getting back to the Class 5A state title game for a third consecutive season. If there is someone who can take them there, it’s frontman Eddie Eviston. In his seven years as a head coach, Eviston is 3-1 in state championship games.
The cupboard isn’t completely bare. Covington Catholic has arguably the best two-way player in Kentucky, Michael Mayern, and a quarterback who threw for almost 3,000 yards in Caleb Jacob. The duo are the cornerstones in which Eviston can lay a foundation around.
Six of the first eight games are at home for the Colonels and that should make the transition to “Friday Night Lights” easier for the newcomers.
Class 5A, District 5
2018 RECORD: 514-1, 3-0 Class 5A, District 5
COACH: Eddie Eviston (43-13 at Covington Catholic, four years; 78-21 overall, seven years)
TOP RETURNEES
Mike Mayer, Sr, TE/LB: The reigning TriState Football Northern Kentucky Defensive Player of the Year, Mayer caused havoc on both sides of the ball in 2018. He finished with 46 receptions for 1,029 yards, averaged 22.3 per reception and had 10 touchdown catches for the Colonels’ offense. Defensively, Mayer was in on 98 total tackles, with three sacks, 20 tackles for losses, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and a 76-yard pick six on his way to Courier-Journal Second Team All-Kentucky (TE), First Team All-NKY (TE & LB) and First Team All-TSF (LB) honors. For his career, he has 60 receptions for 1,261 yards, 15 touchdown catches, 177 total tackles, four forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and one interception. Mayer has verbally committed to Notre Dame.
Daniel Felix, Sr, LB: A returning starter, Felix tallied 49 total tackles, had two sacks along with seven-and-a-half tackles for losses a year ago. He also had three touchdowns on 10 carries.
Caleb Jacob, Jr, QB: In his first year as a starter, Jacob threw for 2,819 yards with 28 touchdowns and only seven interceptions in 2018. He also ran for four touchdowns on his way to Second Team All-NKY honors.
Andy Molique, Sr, DB: In his first season with extended playing time, Molique snagged two interceptions and was in on 22 total tackles as a junior.
James Schwartz, Sr, DB: Was in on 32 total tackles with a sack as a junior.
Trey Gronotte, Jr, K: Heads into his junior year with 172 kicking points on 154 extra points and six field goals at the varsity level.
