Blitz 5 Top 25: GMC gauntlet shows no mercy

The Greater Miami Conference opened up play last Friday and all indications point to it being a very tough ride for everybody ahead. The gauntlet is going to be brutal as Princeton found out at Sycamore.

The Vikings’ loss dropped them five spots and out of the top 10. There are seven GMC teams ranked in the top 14 of this week’s Blitz 5 Top 25 presented by TriStateFootball.com of which six of them will match up against each other. Expect things to be rankled at the top of the poll once again.

Life won’t be easy for No. 23 Ryle, who has rebounded to win three in a row after a loss to opener to No. 6 Covington Catholic. The Raiders are on the road at No. 12 Highlands then at top-ranked Elder the next two weeks. Also, in the Bluegrass State, CovCath pitched its third shutout of the season as it continued its ascension up the ranks.

Could there be a flop at the top next week? Elder is coming off a mentally and physically draining victory. The Panthers take the four-hour drive north on Saturday to play defending Division I state champion Lakewood St. Edward. This has all the makings of a trap game.

On the opposite end of that spectrum, St. Xavier will host road weary Indianapolis Cathedral. The Irish are making their third bus trip to Cincinnati in the last four weeks. The Bombers find the odds in their favor, but must take care of business on their own end.
