Elder destroys Moeller at The Pit 42-6
- Updated: October 13, 2019
WEST PRICE HILL, Ohio – Three turnovers in the second quarter all turned into touchdowns as the Elder Panthers steamrolled the Moeller Crusaders in its GCL-South home opening at The Pit winning 42-6.
The victory gives Elder a 6-1 record, 2-0 in conference play, keeping them on top of the Blitz 5 Top 25 presented by TriStateFootball.com.
The high powered Elder offense jumped out to an early 14-0 advantage in the first quarter.
Elder quarterback Matthew Luebbe threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Drew Ramsey and ran another score in from nine yards out to put Moeller behind the eight ball early.
Thats when the Elder defense was awoken. The Panthers had been criticized by some on that side of the ball for giving up at least 28 points in four of its previous six games this season. The naysayers were put to rest on this night.
On the next three Moeller offensive possessions, the Elder defense created turnovers that turned into points.
Tanner Purdue fell on a loose ball on a sloppy hand off attempt for a fumble recovery. This lead to Luebbe throwing a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end David Larkins.
Next its was Nicholas Seger with an interception on the first play of the ensuing Moeller drive. This setup a seven play drive that was capped off on a one-yard plunge by Cooper Johnson.
Finally, and most impressively, Joey Stemler put a jarring hit on Moeller quarterback Drew Altemuehle that caused his pass to float in the air and was intercepted by Ben Ott. Ott raced 46 yards to the end zone for a pick-six that extended the Elder lead to 35-0.
Luebbe’s second rushing touchdown of the game came with 17 seconds left in the first half. This touchdown activated the running clock putting the game out of reach for Moeller.
Moeller, who could only muster 168 yards of total offense, avoided the shutout when Zach Williams scored a three-yard rushing touchdown as time expired in the game.
Luebbe, who leads the GCL-South in rushing, added 76 more yards to his season total on 10 carries. He also went 17-for-22 passing and 183 yards. Luebbe, who scored four of his team’s five offensive touchdowns, accounted for 259 of the Panthers 349 yards of total offense for the game.
