Blitz 5 Top 25: CovCath finishes on top

After sitting atop the Blitz 5 Top 25 presented by TriStateFootball.com for all but two weeks of the season, Elder fell to La Salle in the regular season finale. It opened the door for Covington Catholic to sneak into the #1 spot in the 2019 final poll. The Colonels finished the regular season undefeated for a third straight year. They held nine opponents to seven points or less including five shutouts.

The La Salle victory gave them the GCL South title outright and the number #2 spot in the rankings. The Lancers beat Elder and St. Xavier, but lost to Covington Catholic and Winton Woods.

Elder beat St. Xavier and Winton Woods while losing to La Salle and St. Edward (9-1). Winton Woods beat La Salle, but lost to Elder, St. Edward and Christian Brothers (MO). St. Xavier beat Colerain, but lost to La Salle and Elder. Colerain beat Fairfield and fell to St. Xavier. Fairfield beat Springfield (9-1, #1 seed in Region 2 playoffs) and went down to Colerain.

That is how Covington Catholic found its way to the top of our final rankings.
