Scott advances over Holmes
- Updated: November 15, 2019
COVINGTON, Kentucky – The Scott Eagles used a 20-point fourth quarter rally to overcome a two-score deficit, beating the Holmes Bulldogs 40-29 at historic Tom Ellis Field winning the Class 4A, District 6 championship.
Jackson Hardin’s fumble recovery in the end zone with 10:56 left in the game began the momentum shift in the favor of the Eagles.
The Scott defense held the Bulldogs high powered running attack, which was leading 29-20 at the time, to its second consecutive three-and-out possession. With the ball on its own 18-yard line, Holmes setup in punt formation and the snap sailed over the punter’s head. Hardin raced to end zone falling on the ball for the score.
The Eagles defense came out especially fired up for the next Holmes possession. Kadon Krallman tackled running back Tayquan Calloway for a loss of four yards. Next its was back-to-back pass breakups by Hardin and Logan McNay leading to another Holmes punt.
That’s when the Eagles running back Quincy Perrin, who unofficially carried the ball 33 times for 256 yards, took over the game.
Perrin dominated the ensuing drive carrying the ball six times for 59 yards, the last for a 15-yard touchdown giving Scott a 33-29 advantage.
The Eagles tacked on a late score to put the game out of reach when quarterback Gus Howlette scrambled 13-yard to pay dirt 1:38 left in the game.
Scott advances to its first regional championship since 2015 when it faces undefeated Boyle County next week who convincingly beat Lexington Catholic 54-7.
Holmes come from behind to beat Scott 50-39 in Week 9 and the same script appeared to unfold in this game as the Eagles took a 14-0 first quarter lead.
The Bulldogs answered by scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter taking a 22-14 lead. Scott scored at the end of the half but missed a two-point conversion attempt as Holmes lead 22-20 at the intermission.
Holmes was lead by the Calloway twins Tayquan and Quantez. Running back Tayquan rushed for 100 yards on 19 carries and caught three passes for 69 yards. Quarterback Tayquan rushed the ball eight times for 72 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns.
Hardin put in an outstanding all-around performance for Scott. On offense he ran the ball five times on double-reverse handoffs for 46 yards and caught a touchdown pass. On defense he grabbed an interception and recovered the bad punt for a touchdown on special teams.
