Cincinnati Round-Up: Warriors win ECC
- Updated: October 2, 2020
This week marked the final week of regular-season action in Southwest Ohio and there was plenty on the line, including some great conference title matchups.
NO. 5 WINTON WOODS 33, NO. 12 TURPIN 13
Winton Woods won their first conference title by taking the ECC crown in the school’s first season in the conference. The final hurdle to do so was the previously undefeated Spartans.
The Warriors got out of the gate fast, racing out to a 14-point lead. It was apparent early on that Turpin would have their hands full with Winton Woods’ quarterback MiChale Wingfield.
The senior connected classmate Tyler Boler on a 28-yard score to start the scoring off and then rounded out the opening quarter with a 3-yard TD run.
The Spartans fought back though. After Drew Covington came up with a big interception, Will Schulok found Jack Feltman for a 3-yard pitch and catch to get Turpin on the board. Schulok would strike again when he found Logan Hurley on a 10-yard TD catch. Following a missed extra point it was 14-13 at the half.
Winton Woods would take over in the second half and it started quickly. A botch snap on the punt gave led to an easy 2-yard TD run by Terren Macklin. Wingfield added two more touchdown passes in the final frame to round out the scoring.
Wingfield finished with 179 yards and three touchdowns on 7-of-14 passing. Tyrek Spikes added 99 yards on 18 carries in the win.
Now both teams will turn their focus to the Ohio DII, Region 8 playoffs and each team will have an extra week to prepare after drawing a bye.
NO. 3 LA SALLE 27, NO. 17 MOELLER 25
The final GCL South contest of the regular season turned out to be a closer affair than many anticipated, but the Lancers were able to hold on. La Salle has now won six of its last eight games against Moeller.
Mason Luensman drilled a 29-yard field goal with 12 seconds left in the game to lift La Salle to victory.
The Lancers appeared to have the game in hand, but Moeller scored twice in less than two minutes and took the lead with just 1:37 when Noah Geselbracht found tight end Josh Kattus for a 13-yard TD.
However, Jaymar Hargove-Mundy made a great tackle on a two-point try by TJ Rottelo and that would prove to be a big play. If converted the game may have gone to overtime.
NO. 7 PRINCETON 40, NO. 16 FAIRFIELD 23
The Vikings grabbed their fifth win of the season in convincing fashion and appear to be poised for a deep postseason run.
Princeton’s defense made a ton of big plays to help pave the way to this victory. Leroy Bowers recovered a fumble for a touchdown and Jamar Mathews added a 60-yard pick six.
Running back Ari Turner netted 159 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries and quarterback Mehki Lynn threw for a pair of touchdowns to pace the Vikings’ offense.
Fairfield’s Jaydan Mayes led all rushers with 28 carries for 112 yards and two touchdowns.
NO. 8 COLERAIN 14, NO. 10 HAMILTON 13
Colerain wrapped up its season with a third straight win, but it didn’t come easy versus Hamilton. The Big Blue actually outagined the Cardinals in the contest by 40 yards, but a failed two-point conversion and one extra turnover proved to be the difference.
Colerain got out to a 14-0 lead after a pair of second quarter scores. MJ Flowers hit paydirt on a 4-yard run and Ronald Williams Jr added another touchdown on a 18-yard fumble return.
After being shut out for three quarters, Hamilton finally dented the scoreboard when Malik Verdon scored on a 32-yard with just over two minutes left in the game.
A late 8-yard TD run by Keyshawn Stephens closed the gap, but when the chips were down the Cardinals’ defense made the play they needed stopping Stephens on the 2-point effort.
