Cov Cath cruises past Highlands
- Updated: October 16, 2020
PARK HILLS, Kentucky – In what is usually the premier game in Northern Kentucky every season the Covington Catholic Colonels dominated the Highlands Bluebirds 42-0 in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown played at Dennis Griffin Stadium.
The Colonels won its 20th straight game and its 49th in the last 50 games. It was also Cov Cath’s sixth consecutive win over Highlands in the series between district opponents.
Covington Catholic has been dominant this season on the defensive side of the ball. The Colonels have surrendered just seven points total in its last three games after giving up 31 points total in its first two contest.
Quarterback Caleb Jacob and running back Sam France each scored on two-yard touchdown runs in the first quarter giving the Colonels a 14-0 first quarter advantage.
Highlands turned the ball over on downs ending its first two drives but despite the missed opportunities the Bluebirds were still in the game during the early going.
Sophomore quarterback Charlie Noon completed a 40-yard pass to Jacob Welch. However, the drive was thrown off schedule on a sack by France forcing a field goal attempt that was missed by the Bluebirds.
Highlands was able to hang tough still trialing just 14-0 at halftime. Jacob opened up the second half with a 31-yard scramble for a touchdown. This put the struggling Bluebirds offense behind the eight ball for the rest of the night.
The Colonels scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the final result of 42-0.
The Cov Cath defense had a lot to do with the Highlands struggles as it was credited with six tackles for loss, four of which were sacks. The Colonels held Highlands to 3-for-11 on third down conversation attempts and forced five separate drives to be turned over on downs.
The Colonels, who had been known for its wide open passing game in recent years dominated the ball on ground rushing for 347 yards.
Jacob, who ran for 106 yards, was efficient in the passing game going 7-for-14 with 99 yards. He teamed up with Ethan Reardon on six of those completions for 88 yards.
Cov Cath remains at home next week against Conner and Highlands hopes to recover by hosting Cooper.
