- Updated: October 30, 2020
There were more tricks than treats Friday in Kentucky high school football. According to the KHSAA Scoreboard there were 45 games across the Commonwealth cancelled due to COVID-19, including a few local matchups. However, there were still some exciting contests that provided a few treats for fans.
NO. 6 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 38, SIMON KENTON 3
The Colonels continued to click on all cylinders as they picked up their 22nd straight win.
The offense rolled to 385 yards while the defense came up with three turnovers and held an opponent to fewer than seven points or less for the fifth straight week.
Senior Owen Nally had a big night as he scored three times while registering 97 total yards on 19 touches. Quarterback Caleb Jacob completed 20-of-30 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Simon Kenton lost for a fourth time in five weeks and have been outscored 80-18 over the last two weeks in losses to CovCath and Ryle. The loss cemented the Pioneers’ first losing regular-season record since 2011.
RYLE 35, COOPER 14
After starting the season 1-3, the Raiders have rolled off four straight victories after Friday’s battle versus the Jaguars.
Ryle raced out to a 21-0 lead in the game’s first 16 minutes behind a pair of rushing touchdowns from Mathias Cusick and another from Gabe Savage.
Cooper closed the gap and played things pretty tight to the vest from that point forward, but the Jaguars were unable to overcome the early deficit.
BEECHWOOD 45, NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 0
It was all Tigers as two of the biggest small school rivals in Northern Kentucky squared off on Friday night. The Thoroughbreds had no answers on either side of the ball.
Mr. Kentucky candidate Cam Hergott continued his stellar 2020 campaign by throwing for three touchdowns and running for another. Parker Mason, Brady Moor, and Liam McCormack each had a touchdown catch in the victory.
