NKY Round-Up: Cooper knocks off Dixie Heights
- Updated: August 28, 2021
After an exciting opening week of action, teams took to the field for a second go around. Despite rain and lightning trying to slow things down, there were plenty of offensive fireworks on display.
COOPER 19, NO. 18 DIXIE HEIGHTS 10
The Jaguars capitalized on early mistakes by the Colonels to build a 13-3 first quarter lead. Senior running back Brendon Tye scored twice in the opening frame and finished with 154 yards on 19 carries in the contest.
Cooper limited Dixie Heights to just 42 yards on 15 carries total and flustered junior quarterback Logan Landers all night long. The senior finished 16-of-32 for 164 yards and no touchdowns and the Colonels converted just 3-of-13 third downs.
Drew Warth wasn’t asked to do much for the Jaguars, but completed 8-of-14 passes for 106 yards, including five passes to Xavier Smith for 79 yards.
Cooper now moves to 2-0 on the year and will host rival Ryle next week. Dixie Heights will look to bounce back as they welcome Conner.
NO. 20 HIGHLANDS 53, SIMON KENTON 38
The two teams combined for 91 points, including 30 points in the game’s final 12 minutes. However, Highlands had control of things for most of the night.
After missing the game last week Charlie Noon was back under center for Highlands in this one and he quickly made up for lost time. In the first half alone he passed for three scores and ran in another to help Highlands take a 29-8 lead to the locker room.
Chase Crone and the Pioneers wouldn’t stop fighting though. The Simon Kenton signal caller threw for three touchdowns in the loss, but the defense couldn’t hold up their end and keep the Bluebirds out of the end zone.
RYLE 40, CONNER 7
It was all Raiders in this one as they got it done on both sides of the ball. Sophomore quarterback Logan Verax took a step forward in this one, passing for a pair of touchdowns.
Junior running backs Jayce Harden and Lukas Colemire both looked strong as well. Harden ran for two scores and Harden added a touchdown of his own.
The defense was paced by Nathan Yoman, who turned an interception into Ryle’s second TD on the night on an impressive pick-six play.
NO. 19 BEECHWOOD 49, PAINTSVILLE 0
It was a long trip to Paintsville for the Tigers, but the ride home was much easier after they sailed to a 49-0 victory. Cameron Hergott ran a two-yard TD run and threw to more and Mitch Berger led all Tigers with three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving).
Beechwood has now outscored their opponents 84-0 through two games. They limited Paintsville to just four first downs in this contest and on offense the Tigers never faced a fourth down in the game.
Here are some other scores from Northern Kentucky teams in action:
Boone County 27, Scott 7
Newport Central Catholic 12, Holmes 8
Lloyd 62, Grant County 26
Woodford County 34, Campbell County 13
Metcalfe County 53, Bellevue 7
Walton-Verona at Holy Cross (rescheduled to SAT 7PM)
