A Division I state runner-up finish and third consecutive Division I Region 2 title has Springfield (13-2) being named the 2021 TriState Football Dayton Team of the Year. The Wildcats have taken this honor three years in a row as a dynasty begins in Champion City.

Springfield which fell to St. Edward, 23-13 in the title game, was fueled by a tenacious defense. The Wildcats posted seven shutouts, all the final 11 games including three in the playoffs. They allowed 157.5 yards (84.0 rush, 73.5 pass), held foes to a 38.0% pass completion rate, 3.0 yards per rush and a stingy 8.0 points per game.

On offense, explosive weapons littered the field led by Ohio Mr. Football finalist, quarterback Te’Sean Smoot. Springfield averaged 349.5 yards of total offense per game (202.7 pass, 146.8 rush) and had six players amass more than 500 yards from scrimmage. Those same six players also scored 48 of the squads 58 offensive touchdowns.

The senior class set the highest standards for the program, going a combined 33-6 (11-3 in the playoffs) over the past three years (42-9 in their four seasons). Three of their losses came, in a state championship game and two in state semi-final contests.

Head Coach Moe Douglass upped his record to 60-32 in eight years at Springfield and 161-86 overall in 21 years.
